Checkerboard halt after startup

I am having a problem after I start my computer. It boots properly and displays the ME logo, and then when it should show the login, it displays only a checkerboard screen and totally freezes. Any advice would be great!

hello try booting into safe mode.from there try system restore.might try running your virus scanner from safe mode allso and goto device manager and check for errors. try removeing monitor from device manager and reboot if unable to get into safe mode to do system restore. heres a link on how to set one from dos http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/30687.html
