Does anyone know how to change the MAC address for either a Dial-Up or Ethernet adapter, so it actually shows up different when I run ipconfig? I know this is possible in Windows 98 through a simple Registry edit, and there is supposedly a program called SMAC that can change the MAC address on XP and 2000. How can this be done on Windows Me?

You cannot change a MAC address, you can only "mask" it to appear changed and even then only sometimes.
This is possible with a router or, as you stated on a NT or 2000 machine as well as some UNIX/Linux machines but not in 98 or ME to my knowlegde.

Tony,
Just so you know, Jimi is right - the MAC Address of a card or device cannot be changed as it is hardcoded to the NIC and is unique, so I'm not sure where you got the idea that an O/S registry change can alter this. On any network the MAC address is the one definable thing that the network relies on, more than the IP address which is only assigned by the operating system anyway.
Might be able to assist a bit more if you let us know what it is you're trying to do and why. While answering this I did a bit of looking into this and sure enough SMAC does allow this, though by default manufacturers of NIC cards do not allow this to be changed - if it's something you want to do then go ahead and use SMAC but I can't think why you would want/need to do this. The link I found is at:
