I downloaded a file with an .iso.exe extention. (I'm figuring the .iso part is part of the filename) I just figured out what an .iso file is and i want to burn it on to a cd, but the real file extention of the file is .exe. How do i change that extention to .iso? I know how to change any other file extention but that one. Also, if anyone knows if there is anyway i can access that file without burning it to a cd rom, ie. extracting it to my hard drive, please let me know

Joe, the .iso is an image of the program that gets converted when you burn it to CD. You shouldnt have to do anything. Accept the defaults and if using nero Make sure Write, Finalize CD, and Disc-At-Once are checked, then choose write.

Yeah, I know what a .iso file is, but my problem is that when i downloaded it, the person that created it made it a .exe file. Basically an .iso file but only with an .exe extention. When i try to burn it to a cd and i choose the folder that it is in from my burning softwate, it wont display because it doesn't have the .iso extention. I neede to change it from .exe to .iso and dont know how.

if all the guy did was change the extension to .exe change it back to .iso via rightclick and rename . Doesnt make sense that he would change its extension unless hes fiddled around with it. what is the program? did you ask the guy or is the guy a pirate at the other end of a file share app.

DO NOT OPEN THIS FILE!

There, now that I have your attention... ;)

Files with double extentions (*.iso.exe, for example) are often viruses or trojan horses. The first extension (.iso) draws attention away from the fact that the file is really an executable (.exe). So, open this one at your own risk, especially if you don't know and trust the source.

However, it *could* be a legitimate .iso, renamed with the .exe extention. How big is it? Real .iso files are usually CD images, and as such are large files. If the file size is a few hundred megabytes it might be a real .iso. If it's only a few megabytes, it's probably a trojan.

One other possibility is that the file you're downloading is one part of a multi-part archive. Programs like Winrar can compress large files into multiple, smaller files. The files would be named like this: filename.iso.exe, filename.iso.r01, filename.iso.r02, etc. In this case, you would need all the parts of the archive to reconstruct the original compressed file.

To answer your last question...you can mount .iso images to your file system without burning them using a program called Daemon tools. You can get it here: http://www.daemon-tools.com/main.htm

Just for info. AFTER you've scanned the file, unclick the hide known files' extension in the folders' control panel. The .exe extension should appear, and all you have to do is rename the file.
