Can someone tell me how to change the computer name. I was given an old PC by a friend and I want to change the name. I search and read some previous posts and made a registry change suggested by some. The computer name has changed some places but the Login name on the windows start menu is still the old name. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

BigBob, I only see where I can change the computer's name in regards to a network at the location you said. What I am trying to do is change the name when you click on the Start button and it shows who is logged on or to log off. Any other suggestions?

And to change name... Start>Run, key in Regedit and press enter. Now in the Left pane, double left click on each of these til you see the contents of the "Current Version" key in the Right pane.
Then in the Right pane you should see "Registered Owner". Right click on it and select Modify and change it to what you'd like.

Nope, it seems to be changed everywhere, including that reg string, except where I want it changed, Start, LogOff. Got me puzzled as to where this info is stored.

BigBob, I found it in the registry under HKLM\Network\Logon. Made the change there and it changed on the start button as to who was logged on. Thanks for the suggestions.
