Change COM Port for Modem

Does anyone know how to move my internal V92 modem from com port 3 to another com port?
No matter what pci slot I put it in, it always installs to com port 3.
There are no settings in my bios to select the com port for modem, and there are no jumpers on the modem card.

I think most internal modems are hard wired to either COM3 or COM4. You cannot use 1 or 2 usually because they are built into the motherboard (the two ports on the back)

Any idea how to add com port 3? It is not shown in my list of ports.
If I try to add it using the Add New Hardware function, I get a mmsystem.dll error.

COM3 would be built into the internal modem card itself, kind of a virtual port. I don't think it will show up in the device manager under ports. Try checking under modem properties; it might let you change it there.

the above answers are correct. most internal modems do install on comms port 3. in other words they create their own comms port and it does'nt show up in device manager under comms ports.

Ya but when I install win98 and load my ISP cd, it won't work because it can't find my modem. I go through the diagnostic steps and the only options to check on finding my modem are COM 1 and 2. It is always such a struggle to get it off of 3 and onto 1 or 2. But this time I just can't remember how to do this infernal task. Thanks for any help given. Dave
