My CD-RW doesnt seem to work at all any more. It doesnt read any cds or it won't burn any cds. I suspect a drivers/software issue. Its properly connected up as I've never removed it before.
I have a LG CD-RW CED-8083B. Though checking System>Devices, it says its just a 'CD Rom'. I'm not sure how long its been like this as I havent used the cd-rw in a while.
I need a way to make the computer recognise what it really is (I presume). I suspect I need drivers for it, but I can't find any myself on the internet. I cant seem to get the LG site to work properly to see if they any offical drivers.
Any help on getting this sorted would be appreciated. Or know somewhere I can obtain drivers for it. Thanks.

Win ME always shows CDRW as CD-ROM's in Device Manager & My Computer, it is Win XP that knows about CDRW. In Win ME it is the burning software that knows that it is a burner drive. As your drive won't even read CD's I suspect your drive's laser optics have just died.

My PC has a DVD-ROM and a CD-RW ,the CD-RW a LG 8120B ,does show up in device manager as exactly that ,with model # and all .I have had very good results with this burner .Do you not have the originial installation CD that came with the burner ,and also in device manager you can try the remove button and upon reboot the system should automatically detect the drive and reinstall it for you ?
Good Luck Nick

You should not have to install drivers for an optical drive...the necessary drivers are built into windows. Try booting to safe mode, go to Device Manager & remove ALL listings for your optical drives (& I do mean ALL). Reboot & let WinME sort it out
This space for rent

I agree I have a LG in a IBM pc and it shows up as CDRW along with the other drive which is DVDrom . Not sure how that would change on it's own . If you kept any restore points try going back a couple of months.

I have just noticed the same problem with my computer. My Cd-RW is listed as a CD-ROM. Windows XP SP2. It only reads Rom disks not RWs What I suggest, which is what I am going to do is to remove the drivers and leave XP to re-recognise the CD-RW,
