cd-r/tv dvd player question

i have just bought a dvd player for my tv as my partner has been moaning a lot recently about watching films ive downloaded onto a cd-r and having to watch them on my small 17 inch monitor,the dvd player instructions say it plays cd-r,s,video cd,s,mp3,s,cd,s and cd-rw,s , the problem is the main reason i bought it was ofcourse to see the films off the internet on my larger tv screen,but it doesnt play them?but it does play audio from my cd-r,s made on my pc.is there anyway to get round this,it says that the dvd player doesnt play cd rom discs,cdv,cdg or photo cd,s
