Hi
All of a sudden the other day, my cd-rw wouldn't recognize blank cds. It recognizes ones that have stuff on it, but when I put a blank cd in it (I've tried different types of blank cdr), it tells me there is no media in the drive. I unloaded, reinstalled cdrom and the Ide's (and now under cdrom in system it just says cdrom drive rather than Philips) I had problems reloading the ide's as windows couldn't find anything and gave me errors in the devices it loaded.
I am running windows me on a compaq with a Philips (cdd4801), I've checked for viruses, adware, cleaned out my computer, looked all over the net for hints...
I just want to get my cdrom writer back so that I can back up my files, wipe and reinstall...
Can anyone tell me how to fix this?
Thanks in advance
Ness

If all else fails, panic

Great Thank you very much for replying! I didn't find that one during my search...
The weird thing is that this and when it started is reminiscent of the C-dilla virus that corporations (like turbo tax and a few others I read) put on their software to prevent copies http://www.privacyandspying.com/privacy-c_dilla.html. Supposedly if you have it and you remove it incorrectly it can cause issues. I didn't find it on my drive but then again I could've removed it with spyware or virus removers after I downloaded trials of alcohol and cd clone (which didn't work on my puter).
I've had similar with Norton's and my modem 3 or so times. The only fix I could find is to uninstall Nortons, wipe and reinstall. Foolishly I have Norton Firewall and am wondering if it's the same but doing this to my cdrom instead. From other things I've seen on the web and one technical support from a computer place, it is software, but it may be just that I should take my first idea and buy a second drive and pray it works and doesn't encounter the same issue.....
Thanks again,
Ness
