Probably needs a good clean up Job. If the Drive is fairly Old, try doing the following. If however it is brand new, take it back to where you bought it and demand a new one.
Firstly, before performing any of the below, try running a CD-Rom cleaner through it.
Make sure you have the following tools available. Cotton swabs, 99.9% IPA, Philips Screwdrivers, Can of Compressed Air, paperclip, patience.
1. Shut down computer and Unplug.
2. Disconnect cables from Drive.
3. Remove Drive from carriage.
4. with a straightened out paperclip. Insert it into the tiny hole located in the front of drive to open the tray. You'll often times need to take the front face off to get the outer metal cover off.
5. remove screws holding the outside of the metal case on.
6. carefully remove outer casing, often times it will be held there by little plastic tabs attached to the front face. Carefully depress these until you are able to remove the cover.
7. Find the little eye that is located inside the CD Drive and with a cotton swab saturated with IPA (Isopropyl Alcohol) very gently wipe the eye clean. Be careful here, as that little eye can easily get misaligned if you are rough with it.
8. With canned air, clean out any dirt or debris you find, again take particular care of the little eye.
9. Put the puppy back together in reverse order.
10. Attach the cables, turn on the computer and try the drive.
