Subject: CD-ROM not recognized
Comment:

I recently got a new hard drive and starting installing my stuff from scratch. I got pretty much everything set up and drivers loaded, but the cd-rom won't work right. It loads on boot, and is shown as being there, but when i try to read from it(i.e. windows explorer) it only says "enter a cd...". I have a burner as the slave also and that works perfect. What do I do?? Thanks

Oh, I am running windows ME on a Dell XPS T500 pentium 3, and the dvd-rom drive that is not working is a Toshiba M1212 drive.

Does your burner work? My burner said it should be the master. I wonder if that is part of the problem.

Your burner can be a slave. Your setup is identical to mine. I do not have any problems with the dvd-rom as secondary primary and the burner as the seconary slave. However, you are having the same IDENTICAL problem I have with the CDROM. In my case, it's my burner that my system
the bios and windows " sees " but cannot read an audio or data disk. I just upgraded my burner and took great care of the older one (rarely used btw) and installed it into another system & could read disk. Put the burner back in the original system and could not read disk as well. I have a message on this forum for some help. I think it's harware related, not software. I'm waiting from the vendor for an answer.

I have heard of this in a few cases,it was related to the new windows media player. The following is a excerpt from the letter w/the fix.I hope its related to the problem.

In the directory windows/system/iosubsys you find the file scsi1hlp.vxd. All you have to do is rename is, for example, scsi1hlp.xxx and the problem is solved!! At least the CD rom is working fine now and I haven't seen any other problems. Hope that helps your friend. HQ

Good luck all

Well tried the above solution and sadly have to report, no go ! It just does not want to spin long enough to read the CD or sense that a CD is inserted into the tray. Still waiting for a corporate reply.

Check your cmos by holding in delete during boot. Then see if your cd-rom is even being booted up. If not, make sure it is.

The issue we are having is that the CDROM is recognized by the bios and windows, but,
when the user inserts a CD (audio/data), it is not being read at all. It's like the CD is not in the tray.

I am having the same problem, with it not recongizing the CDROM at all, and I have a new 30 gig hard drive and just purchased a new CD ROM, also and load the boot disk in to load the drivers and it still says it can't read the hard drive to install Windows ME, any suggestions to get it to reconigize the CDROM, to load the full version Windows ME, I am at a loss on this. Thanks.

My system will read discs created by the CD Writer but it will not read any other disc. I have made HP replace my drives a couple of times and the same thing keeps happening. It will read a CDR or CDRW but not a normal audio CD or data CD (i.e a setup disc, windows, programme, etc.)
