Comment:

At the desktop, when I click on "My Computer," usually five icons appear in the window:
3-1/2 Floppy (A:)
CD-ROM Drive (D:)
Local Disk (C:)
Control Panel
Hewlett Packard ... that's our camera.

Well, the icon for "CD-ROM Drive (D:)" has disappeared! I'm not sure if it's drive "D:" or not, I'm just guessing from memory, since it's not there now. Where did it go? The problem is, we can put a CD in the drive, but it won't play it. The CD-ROM icon is also not in the list in My Computer/Control Panel/System/Device Manager either... but when I start up in SAFE MODE, I do see it in there. PLEASE HELP us get our icon/program back!!! Thank you.

is there power to your CDROM? will the tray open when the system is running? Is there a CDROM in the drive?

Check those problems first. If you have power and there is no CD in the tray, try removing the CDROM from the device manager and then rebooting the system.

Also, has anyone been in the BIOS and turned the Secondary IDE to 'not present' or 'off'?

Also, put a CD in the tray and see if the system will start the 'autorun' feature of the CD.

There are other options, but are a little more technical and would probably require assistance from an expierenced user.

Does your CD-ROM drive work properly?
Does it have power and a data connection?
Check to see if the ribbon cable is on backward.

You might want to run the "Add New Hardware"
wizard if you haven't tried that already

P.S. don't know if this will help, but check the jumper settings (if there are jumpers). You can not have more masters or slaves than your system will allow.
