CD writer can't play audio CD

I have used my CD writer before to copy and play audio and data CDs.
But since last week, the CD writer can't either play or copy audio CD anymore. It works fine with data CD. Media player also can't play the audio CDs.
Could someone help me solve this problem. Is there a registry key or a tool that could disable the use of audio CD on this device?

FYI, I loaded a protected audio cd into my CDRW and had a hell of a time getting it to recognise any audio CD's after that. Somehow it knew that it was a CDRW and disabled some things. After I removed and reinstalled the writer in the system devices it came good for other audio cd's but the protected one screwed me over again as soon as I put it in there again. Once again I removed the device and reinstalled, it came good, and then I put the protected cd into the DVD drive and it worked OK. It seems that if you put certain protected cd's into a writer it causes havoc with your system. There is some information on the web about it, which helped me, but I can't remember where and can't find it at the moment.

My mistake in using the term CDRW. What I meant was I was putting the audio cd into my cd re-writer (burner) just to listen to it and it stuffed things up. Some stupid form of copy protection used by some recording companies.
