Hi,
My PC recently crashed whilst downloading an e-mail. At the time my CDRW drive went crazy. when I re-booted the PC the following message came up 'the following configuration options were automatically updated Disk 1 19470 (MB) Disk 4:CD:ROM'. This now also refers to DISK 3 CD:ROM when booting.
System restore doesn't work. My CD Recovery disk won't work and the CDRW drive has a mind of its own.
Have scanned for viruses and spyware but nothing found. Also when I go into system properties the CDRW is not there however if I then delete the CDROM drive in device manager and re-boot the PC the drive repears but goes again when the PC crashes again.
Has anyone any ideas as i'm really stuck since the PC crashes whenever it likes.
Thanks
Ted

Use one of these free on-line scanners (note some spyware, viruses and trojins have been known to disable PC based AV scanners):

You Compaq BIOS/POST detected a change in CD-ROM configuration. (It only knows about CD-ROM devices of which a CD-RW is one). However your post is a bit confusing. Are you trying to say that post now sees two CD-ROM drives (3 and 4) when there is only one. Or that you have two CD-ROM type drives?
Your CD-Rom drive could have just gone bad, or something on your system board could have gone bad. Compaq often jumpers their disk drives and CD-ROM drives for "Cable Select" and places them on different IDE channels. This can cause problems when either the drive electronics fail or the IDE interface fails. One drive can be seen as two devices. One trick when this happens, is to re-jumper the disk drive as Master (MS) and the CD-ROM drive as Slave (SL) and see if that helps.
But I suspect you CD-ROM drive electronics is failing and it needs replaced. Recommend removing the drive and having it tested on another working system and see if it is bad or if it is a system board problem.

Have a DVD drive and CDRW drive but sometimes the device manager seems to find 3 drives at the moment when only 2 are installed.
Have scanned for viruses/spyware etc but nothing found.
Have just tried Hp Help and they also recommend removing the drive and trying without it.
thanks
