What CDs doesnt it read? CD-RWs, CD-Rs? PS CDs? DVDs?
The cheap 52x cd drives will only normally read CD-R, and premade CDs. Others will read CD-RWs, and none will read PS/2 cds as these are DVDs.
What CDs isnt it reading?

And if it is a music cd... it may be the new encryption installed by the music companies.

USA Today article from 8-2001 on unrippable cds that won't play in a computer's cd rom

There's been some more recent stuff, but I can't remember where I read it.

I have a similar problem in a CompaQ 1750 Armada Notebook CD-ROM which WinME finds and reports as working normally but it thinks that there is no medium in the cdrom. It doesnt matter whether its the MS Win OS or any other cdrom disc. The Toshiba CDRom model XM1902B is the original equipmnt, It spins and does all the normal whirring sounds, but reads NOTHING.
I downloaded ex Compaq new updated CMOS which is normally on its own partition on a Compaq notebook, diagnostics and drivers tho none were required by winME. Then a friend wiped the HDD and reinstalled WinME without any of the Compaq partition or diagnostics, I think by removing & directly loading OS in another machine, but still CDrom no read. And I cant put on any more software or install a printer. I have www connection and can net download to notebook, floppy and everything else is OK. Have tried to gently clean the cdrom lazer lens with cotton bud and methylated spirits, but the CD still not reading. Everything else works OK.
I am trying to network it to use the cdrom of my PC but no luck yet.

I and my friends have run out of ideas, & I cant aford to replace the notebook or cdrom.
Does anyone know an answer, I'm stuck. Help please!

hello
on some computers the cd-r wont read bruned data.i found by going into device manager and resetting the speed for cd-r from quad speed ahead to just one will temporary solve this.the reason or mostlikely one why its not reading burned data is the lazzers getting dirty.its been the case in houses where peaole smoke more times than not seconed hand smoke is hazerduse to you computer lol
try this you can allways set it back if it dont work
have a nice day

My problem is similar, that my cd-rom driver stopped reading any CD.
Windows reports it as working properly.
Also, I can right click on the drive name and eject the CD.
When I put the CD in the drive, it spins, but when I try to browse the contents, it tells me that there is no media.
Mine is Creative 48x CDrom
Thanks alot
