OS: Windows ME
CPU/Ram: Amd 400mhz 3D Now
Comment:

When I put a new disk in either D:or E: drive Windows Explorer or My Computer will not recognize the new disk until after several closures of explorer or My Computer.

Quite often I will end up with Explorer showing multiple instances of the drives if I am using a number of disks.

The only way to resolve the problems is to reboot the computer.

the problem also occurred when I was using Windows 98

I'm assuming you're inserting a CD that contains data. Are you sure you're giving the drive enough time to spin up for the CD to be seen?

Hi Jennifer

Yes Sometimes I will let it try for 30 seconds to a minute to recognize the drive, possibly longer if I go to my desktop and try through "My Computer".

Thanks

John

John,

Wondering, about a couple of things. You said, "...will not recognize the new disk until after several closures of explorer or My Computer... Quite often I will end up with Explorer showing multiple instances of the drives if I am using a number of disks... ...I will let it try for 30 seconds to a minute to recognize the drive, possibly longer..."

Would like to know, for sure, what is happening. Are you saying, that there are more than one (each), listing of your D:\, and E:\ drives? Also, when you put a pre-recorded\burnt CD, into the CD-ROM\CD-RW\DVD\DVD-RW.., ect., you're not able to explore it.

When was the last time, you did a disk clean up, scandisk, defrag? Also, updated the drivers, for the motherboard.

Are there any ghosts/redundant drives, listed in "Device Manager", in safe mode? Or any problems listed there, in normal mode?

drive = hardware device
disk = media, to be read, by hardware device

That's what I'm using, for defs, to read your post/question. Correct this, if wrong, thanks.

Hi CrazyOne

First off My Computer is an IBM Aptiva 2170-24a Amd 400mhz 3D Now, 20gb Hdd with 256Mb Ram. I use Zone Alarm when I am connected to the net. I currently have Windows ME installed. I often revert back to Windows 98 SE when ME starts to play up.

I don't know what type of Motherboard is in the machine. I haven't downloade any updates for the Drives.

Once a week I run Scandisk, Defrag, download new virus definitions and run my virus detection program, run SpyBot and AdAware, all of which I ran yesterday due to the latest problems with Sasser Virus, although Windows ME was not listed as being affected.

I have also used a CD Ceaning Disk with a little brush on it to clean off any dust that may have been on the laser

When I was using Windows 98 until last week and was in Windows Explorer and searched a number of CD'r or CDRW's for particular files quite often in Windows Explorer I would end up with 1/2 dozen instances of my D:Drive (DVDRom 16/48)or my E: Drive (CDRW 32x12x40) being shown. To clear the problem I would shut the computer down. This problem was intermittent. and I don't think it has happened since I put Windows ME on

Then when I installed Windows ME the next problem was that when I changed disks in either the D: or E: Drives often but not always the computer still thinks the old disk is still in the Drive.

Recently I started to catalog all my CDR's and CDRW's and sometimes the computer will recognize the new disk and sometimes it wouldn't. On the occasions where it didn't I would have to eject the disk from the drive and put it back in and if that didn't work after a few attempts I would try selecting the particular disk through "My Computer" and if that didn't work I would shut the computer right down and restart. That would correct the problem temporarily.

Could the problem be the type of media I am using. Because I have a large number of disks where I have stored mp3 copies of all my Music Cd's (2 copies one of which my brother-inlaw looks after) and am also copying my casette tapes, because I lost all my music once before in a house fire, I buy my media in bulk and it is not always the same type.

I used Nero 5 and then 6.0 to write to my CDR's and Nero INCD to write to my CDRW's.

Thank you for your concern.
