We have an emachine, we're running Windows ME, and out of nowhere our icon for our CD drive disappeared out of "My Computer" window and now our CD drive stopped working. Any ideas on what happened & how to fix? Thanks. GG

That happened in the reverse order, your CD drive quit working so Windows automatically took the icon out of the list. Check in Device Manager for errors relating to the CD-ROM drive. Try removing it and see if it gets detected again when you reboot.
To tell the difference in a hardware and a Windows software problem, make a Windows ME startup diskette (Add/Remove Programs - Startup disk tab) and boot the system with it and see if it can detect the drive in DOS mode. If it does not detect it, you have a hardware problem. If it detects it in DOS and you can do a DIR of a data CD, then its a Windows ME problem.
