Hi,

MY CD drive disappeard after i installed software for the Zillion MP3 player. I uninstalled the player software, but the CD didnt come back.

I have tried changing the drive for another CD, and it still doesnt work. So i have downloaded a new IDE thingy and tried installing that, and it still wont find my drive.

The IDE shows in safe mode, but not in normal mode.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix this please?

Lynne

Try installing the cd by using the add new hardware and let windows search for a better driver, if that dont work than try downloading a driver off the internetl. You could do a search by your cd drive name in google.com.

Hi Lynne,

Check out the link below. There is a .reg file there you can download that will delete the NOIDE entrie in the registry if it is there for you along with a couple of other things to check.

CDROM MISSING IN WINDOWS

The link says missing cdrom in Win98 but also applies to WinME.

Thanks wawadave,

CD rom isnt in device manager. at least, not in normal mode. have deleted from safe mode and that doesnt fix it.

Mesich,
Ive put the noide file in, even though i couldnt find any noide by doing a search. i cant open sysedit from run, it wont let me. Have tried to open it from explorer, but i cant find a program to open it.

I know there is system restore.. Im doing everything i can before using that, as the last restore point is 25november.

I really appreciate you trying to help me, im very grateful!

I dont know how possible this is, but...

Recently a friend of a friend talked me through how to go back a day on his friends computer (she is less computer literate than me you see). and it was done (i think) in the BIOS settings? Her computer uses win98, so i dont know if that is any diferent for this, but if i can go back a week in the BIOS settings, i could then download a program to clean up the registry entries, without losing data.

Is this possible to do at all?

Lynne

There is something that most of the time works for me in my job of tech support for HP;

If systems stops seeing CD and CDRW Use regedit (start > run > regedit) to remove the keys named - UpperFilter and LowerFilter from: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

[Make sure the key is exact - there are many similar there that can damage your system]

It has to do with cd recording software making a mess of things. Specifically Roxio brand.

email me, let me know if it works :)
