My CD drive does not autorun data CD's it does run audio. I can hear the CD driver trying to start about six times, then it gives up, the CD's I am using do work on another machine. I have five disks, four do not run, one does. Is there a check box somewhere that I have not checked, I have tried everything in the help files without success, can anyone help please? Cheers

right click on the my computer icon
left click on properties
go to the device manager tab
click the + sign beside CDROM
right click on the drive that doesn't autorun
left click on properties
go to the settings tab
and see if Auto insert notification is checked.

I don't know if it has any relevance but I no longer seem to have System Restore available although it was there a couple of months ago, I use Cyberscrub for my sins and I am wondering if I might have removed things I shoudn't have.
I dunno, as a computer expert I would make a good bricklayer!!

I dunno if it will help, but recently tried to load a data cd on to a friends computer and it would not read it. Turned out that all I needed was a later driver for the cdrom. Did a windows update and got everything up to scratch and then searched for driver usind the cdrom properties and found one online. Fixed the problem.

Hi, thanks for the info, I have searched the web ect. and the driver I have is apparently the most up-to-date one, I have found the following message when delving into my computer;
NETWORK\VREDIR\0000 error code 28
could this have any connection to my problem?
another one is;
ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering -
ACPI\*PNP0C0F\00000002 Error code 22
I wish I could understand all this.

Cheers for any help forthcoming from y'all

Regards

John

JOHN,
I HAVE BEEN HAVING SO MUCH TROUBLE WITH MY CD ROM I HAVE BEEN DOING EVERYTHING TO CORRECT TO PROBLEM. I DID FIND ONE POST IN HERE FROM THE KID ON HOW TO MAKE ME RUN BETTER THAT WORKED GREAT. MADE EVERYTHING RUN GREAT THEN ONE DAY EVERYTHING GOES SOWN HILL AGAIN AND IT TAKKES FOREVER TO GET IT BACK TO PROFORMANCE. TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION THE ACPI IRQ Holder for PCI IRQ Steering -
ACPI\*PNP0C0F\00000002 Error code 22 IS A NORMAL POST IS THE ERROR. IF WIN ME IS NOT USING THE STEERING IT WILL POST THAT ERROR DON'T WORRY ABOUT THE ONE.

I have just tried a new data CD and it works fine, the other three still do not, if I get copies made on another computer will it be possible to alter the program in any way so that I can open them, pressumably a copy will still present the same problem?

Any one out there that can help me please?

John

Something else worth checking on is are the problem CD's multisession? Some cd-drives can't read multi session cd's. My old CD would not read them (it was just on two years old!) but the new one reads them no hassle. You may need a firmware update from the manufacturer if one is available. Have you tried the cd's on someone elses computer?

Hi D4
Yes I have tried my CD's on another machine and they work fine, I have just received another data CD from Windows Advisor and that works fine, I have tried searching for a new driver but have been informed that the one I have at the moment is the most up-to-date, is this the same as a multisession reader? my system is nearly three years old.
Thanks for the help
John

Just had another thought, if the CD's I can't read are in MSDOS I would not be able to open them in Windows ME....or should I be able to? if so...How?

Here's to getting ready to throw two CD's away.

Help

Cheers John
