everytime i turn on the computer it loads the windows millenium edition screen and everything and then it says "cannot find system.ini, boot with emergency boot disk and type scanreg /restore " and i dont have the disk that it came with so i went on bootdisk.com and downloaded the file that said windows me boot disk. so i got it and pressed run and extracted onto the floppy disk (on my other computer) and then put the floppy in the windows me and ran the computer, and i did the surface scan (2hrs 40mins) and all the other options that it suggested i think and still nothing. i even tried typing in "scanreg /restore" and nothing happened it just said command not recongized or something like that. so im wondering what i should do? is it the floppy disk contents? am i not supposed to check the box that says file extraction when puttin the bootdisk file on the floppy? or what!? please someone help
The file you downloaded should have been called BOOTME.EXE. When you double click on it & then click RUN, it will say "insert floppy to write"...pop in a formatted floppy & click OK...it will then say "writing disk" & will count up to 100%. Once it's complete, simply boot off the floppy & select Option 4, "minimal boot". Then at the A:\> prompt, type SCANREG /RESTORE, hit enter & pick a date from the list
i got all the way to where i type the command when i do type "SCANREG /RESTORE" it says "Bad command or file name" i dont know, i think i put the bootdisk part on the floppy wrong, and its not like i can just change it because all my computers dont have floppy drives, the way i got it was i had to go to my church and do it there! guessi have to wait another week!
"i think i put the bootdisk part on the floppy wrong"
Well... it boots up doesn't it? That part seems to be working
Does it say "bad command or filename" whenever you enter scanreg /restore ?
If so, that can mean the file (scanreg.exe) is not on the floppy OR you're somehow spelling it incorrectly (every time)
Are you entering the command from the a:>\ prompt?
Might want to try making another one, and maybe on a different floppy too - for ME, I like to use the 'Custom, No Ramdrive' one, but it shouldn't matter
Floppy drives have gone out of fashion entirely too soon, I'd say
Saying that XP is the most stable MS OS is like saying that asparagus is the most articulate vegetable
"Might want to try making another one, and maybe on a different floppy too - for ME, I like to use the 'Custom, No Ramdrive' one, but it shouldn't matter"
Actually, I just had a look & it DOES matter. The "normal" BOOTME.EXE does NOT have scanreg.exe, but the BOOTMEC.EXE ('Custom, No Ramdrive') does.
Hi, I have been having the same problem with ME but I was wondering if I could use a cd instead of a floopy since none of my other computers (with xp) have a floopy drive. I suppose I could by an external floppy drive, but would a cd still work? I am not really used to ME and much more familiar and prefer Win XP and 98. How do I get to the MS Dos Command in ME? Thank you.
Please forgive me since i am brand new to this forum.
I also wanted to add that I cannot get to the desktop because it has a registry problem and i need to do the scanreg. it also asked if i want to start in safe mode or normal mode, etc. when i could get to the dektop (barely after waiting for 6 minutes) there was a message saying that the active desktop has been disabled (?)(like I said i am not used to Win ME at all)
I am actually helping the pastor of my church with this computer. he does not have all the recovery disks only #2 and #3. Would installing Win 2000 help the problem or make it worse?
