After installing a new program on Windows ME. I restarted the computer. I receive the message Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 %1:%2. I tried to get into safe mode to uninstall the offending software but my keyboard isn't loading so that I can continue. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Hi Margo,
What is the program you've been trying to install,it may help to know...and if you've been downloading it from the net did you make a scan with your antivirus?
Bill

Will you're keyboard work at all?Can you restore the registry from a bootdisk/command prompt?
scanreg /restore

Google to the rescue...we always seem to overlook/skip the obvious, don't we? LOL
Hope she gets it straightened out!

The program was Print Shop Photo Workshop version 12 or possibly Family Tree Maker Deluxe Edition Version 9. I installed Family Tree first. I then installed Print Shop. Print Shop told me to restart Windows. That's when the trouble started. The keyboard works in the Bios but I can't seem to use it anywhere else. I tried the disk that came with the computer, but it doesn't boot it to Windows.

gdivens51 Thanks for the web address but unfortunately I can't do what it suggest because I can't start Windows. Thanks for trying.

The information in this article applies to:
Microsoft Windows Millennium EditionSummary
Windows Millennium Edition (Me) includes the System Restore tool, however, you cannot start the System Restore tool from a command prompt. Because of this, it may be useful to start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in Safe mode. This article describes how to start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in Safe mode.
More Information
To start the System Restore tool when you are unable to start your Windows Me-based computer normally or in Safe mode, you can temporarily change the Windows shell from Explorer.exe to Progman.exe:
Start your computer by using the Windows Me Startup disk.
At the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot.
At the command prompt, type edit c:\windows\system.ini, and then press ENTER.
Edit the shell= line so that it looks like this:
shell=progman.exe
Press ALT+F, and then press S to save the changes to the System.ini file.
Press ALT+F, and then press X.
Remove your Windows Me Startup disk, and then restart your computer. When your computer restarts, Program Manager should start. If Program Manager does not start, repeat steps 1-7, being careful to follow these steps exactly, and then continue to the next step.
On the File menu, click Run, type msconfig in the Command Line box, and then press ENTER.
Click Launch System Restore to begin restoring your computer to a previous, functional state.
NOTE: After you configure your computer to start Program Manager, you can start the System Restore tool by typing c:\windows\system\restore\rstrui.exe at a command prompt, and then pressing ENTER.For additional information about the System Restore tool, click the article number below to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q267951 Description of the System Restore Utility in Windows Me

Well if you got a USB keyboard then you need to go into the BIOS and find the USB Emulation option and turn it on to get it to work in DOS. Then boot to dos and rename the wininit.ini file. OR if you got Norton 2000, you may try safe mode and see if you can uninstall it.

Thanks everyone for the help. It turned out to be that the USB Keyboard was disabled in the BIOS. After getting the keyboard to work I was able to get into Windows without any trouble at all. Everything is working normally now.
