I have some new problems with Windows ME that are probably the result of two worms I just found - W32.Protoride.worm and W32.Hllw.hai Norton AV was able to quarantine the Hllw and I changed the config.sys according to their instructions. Norton could not repair or quarantine the protoride, so I’m supposed to go into the registry and make some changes (I’ve
done some registry changes, but I’m a bit nervous I’ll mess the whole thing up).The windows problems are:
1. I cannot shut down using tart/shutdown. When I hit “ok” it just goes back to a normal
screen. I have to use control-alt-delete to shutdown.
2. I cannot see the ‘properties’ of many icons using the right click (my computer, etc), i have to use the run menu instead.
3. In Control Panel I cannot open ‘system’, add/remove software, and add/remove hardware.
4. I cannot open norton AV directly, i have to use norton system works. It’s an HP Pavillion 8755C, Pentium III, 256 ram
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try the Norton fix, looks like a fairly simple registry edit, back up the registry first. Then if everything works and your problems are fixed, delete the backed up copy.
One of those worms is ancient, do you update your antivirus software?

Leroi, Thanks for your reply.
I finally completed the registry edit exactly according to Symantec’s instructions. (Had to backup the computer, etc) The worm is gone, but the problems still remain. If you can think of anything else, I’d appreciate it.
Thanks!
Caitlyn
