Hi,

I installed Java Runtime Environment 1.4.2_02 (for Mozilla 1.5 and it works great, except for object and embed tag applets, invoked by activeX?) and after opening the Java Control Panel applet in the control panel, I can't shut down properly. It acts like it is going to shut down, then it goes to a black screen with a cursor flashing in the upper left hand corner and just sits there (supposed to shut down automatically), nothing left to do except push the power button. Then scan disk runs on restart because an improper shutdown has been detected.

I checked Norton System Information (NSW 2001, fully subscribed and updated with only the antivirus running in the background, also BOClean and Kerio v2.1.5) and Javaw.exe remains in memory after the Java Control Panel applet is closed.

Sysinternals Process Viewer's kill process function (right click>kill process) has no effect on Javaw.exe.

I can restart with no problem by doing the three finger salute twice (Javaw.exe doesn't appear in the task manager).

I have not had shutdown problems since I first got this computer (Presario 5005R, my first) when I learned a lot about stopping most all the startup programs from loading with Windows. This did not occur with JRE 1.4.1 beta which I had for a long time, but I knew that I probably needed a newer version for security and compatibility reasons.

If I don't open the JCP applet, Javaw.exe doesn't ever appear in memory (that I know of) and I have no problem shutting down.

Thankyou for any advice.

hello
you might try this link.
http://www.aumha.org/a/shtdwnme.php
you might try doing bug report to mozillia.
might try there sight see if this was coverd.
i ran mozillia 1.40 and bata 1.4someting with out problems. you might try uninstalling mozillia and reinstall it from safe mode. incase some thing was failing to install properly.
you still have system restore but that will uninstall mozillia and any thing else not instald befor the restore point.
thats all i got on this i,m still running the bata mozillia . might hold back on the upgrade now.

Can't say I've had a problem, I'm using all the latest releases on one OS or another and found bugs, just not yours.

So I can only point you to Mozdev.org - Java FAQ which I'm sure you've seen before. I'm guessing you've already tried some form of reinstallation of the Sun package.

LOL :) ...and I've just seen you've posted on Mozillazine ...I was gonna suggest that's probably the best place for your query.

Thanks for the suggestions,

Actually I think this is more a JRE bug than a Mozilla issue. I opened the JCP applet this morning as an experiment to see what would happen before I did anything else and the same thing happened (doh!). I have reinstalled JRE, to see if it would help, cleaned the reg and everything beforehand, even used a newly downloaded installer. I always exit all programs and disable antivirus before uninstalling/installing programs, never tried installing anything from safe mode though, might try that...

I am not sure, but I think this is a 9x issue with the newer JREs. I have very little running in the background at startup, only BOClean, NAV auto-protect and Windows processes (of which I have done considerable modification, renamed several .exe files and removed others that I felt were unnecessary on my system and all has worked well for well over a year), System Restore is disabled. I use Kerio's update feature to begin the dial up process (when I start Kerio, it invokes the process).

I guess until I can figure this out, if it is even possible. I will have to restart using C+A+D after modifying any options in JCP if I can remember to. I rarely open JCP, but it really ticks me off when something doesn't work just right.

The 1.5 version of JRE is due to be out pretty soon, hopefully this issue will have been worked out by then, but everything now is made for XP, I think that is part of the problem, don't want to "upgrade" to that. My daughter won a Dell pc with XP on it for her great school work and I do not like XP.

Again I appreciate your input and advice very much and look forward to more. <8^)

I know where your answer is or where you'll find what you want. Don't know if you've joined already, but, if the the answer isn't in there, then it's nowhere. Sun Developer Network.

I'd head for the forums and bug parade.

Leroi,

I suggested that because of what google was consistantly turning up when I typed in JRE Bug Fixes. Everyone I clicked on wanted me to join.

I also noticed bug parade where you could fill out bug reports, could be useful ?

If it's a developers network then they should know what's what with known, or even unknown, bugs and issues, I figured they must have everything listed within that site it'd just be a case of finding it.

When you do get a useful response, do us a favour and post it, thanks :)

Hi,

>>When you do get a useful response, do us a favour and post it<<

Sure will.

I found another very similar problem here:

http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jsp?forum=32&thread=443781

(Sorry, haven't figured out how to make live links here yet.)

This person hasn't received a response yet either.

I will look for the place to make a bug report, never did that before with anything.

I do believe it is a bug in the program because my computer hardly ever has problems (knock on wood!).

Well, I decided to drop back and punt since I haven't received any advice at Sun Java Forums. I uninstalled 1.4.2_02 and installed 1.4.1_05 which solved the issue with javaw remaining in memory after I close the JCP applet and no shutdown problems so I guess I'm satisfied, but a bit disappointed.

Sun should not list WinME as a supported OS on 1.4.2_02 having not done enough testing on the platform (imo) to make sure problems like this don't exist. This is just plain sloppy programming for a process that supposedly has been closed to remain in memory, a process that takes over 9MB of memory at that.

I will inform y'all if I ever get a satisfactory solution from Sun or anywhere else.

Thankyou for your interest in my problem.
