can't open folders! or do searches!

ok could someone please tell me how to fix this: all file folders (except 'my documents') don't open when i double click them...they open up a search window. i can only view the contents by 'exploring'. in addition, i just noticed i lost the ability to perform ANY searches, i'll type something in and click search now and nothing happens.this goes for the unwanted search windows as well as the normal search command.
i've cleared the icon cache before but i'm willing to try anything to get this figured out.
