Can't open anti-virus scanner

I think I got a virus from downloading something and now I can't open my anti-virus scanner and when I to get a trial version of one it doesn't open either so how do I get rid of this virus? Iexplore is there when I ctrl+alt+delete, when I close it I can open my anti-virus scanner but then Iexplore comes right back and closes it.

try running virus scanner from safe mode
