Can't open a word document

I can't open a word document. I get a message saying that winword has caused an error in winword.exe and then closes. I first tried reinstalling Word 2000, but that doesn't work. Then I tried finding the normal.dot file and deleting it, but it says that access is denied because the source file may be in use so I can't delete it. How do I find the source file?
Start in safe mode, then do a search for normal.dot and delete it. Then try Word again. If you still have problems you may have to completely remove Word (and Office if its part of an Office installation) by uninstalling it and then searching your hard drive and registry for mentions of it and deleting them as well. Then reboot and reinstall Word.
