Hi,
I have a 166 MMX with 128 Mb which recently has had a problem with its Win Me (maybe from a virus attack); after loading the Win Me logo full screen it rebooted without notice. The antivirus didn't find anything so I backed up my data and formatted c: drive.
I tried to reinstall Win Me but after the first step finishes (collecting info about the pc), it reads from drive a: and a black small window appears on screen and the setup doesn't continue. No difference if I put a diskette in the drive.
I tried with Win 98 and Win 95 but the same problem.
Any clues?
Thanks in advance for your prompt replies.
Best regards,
John.

if you got a virusfree (!!!) bootdisk (anything) try to format the disk with that!
or try to make a boot disk with partition magic and format the harddrive with that!
you might altso want to get a mouse driver on the disk!

Hi. If the problem only occurs after reading that diskette. Try using a different Windows ME boot diskette.

Hi,
thanks for your replies. I 've tried both, the setup has overcome the previous problem but now I 'm stuck to the problem that forced me to format the hard disk and reinstall windows. That is, when the setup reaches the part to detect h/w it reboots and then it keeps rebooting!!!!
I've run a McAfee emergency disk with the latest dat files but it didn't find any viruses.
Is it still a virus problem or is it something else? I 'm desperate about it 'cause I can't even install Win Me in a formatted hard disk.
Thanks in advance.
John.

John,
You might want to give this a read. Might just be helpful.
Good Luck
P.S. "I've run a McAfee emergency disk with the latest dat files but it didn't find any viruses."
Speaking of viruses.
When you do an install/upgrade, you want to disable all virus things. That includes, in the BIOS.
You're Welcome

Hello...I always use the win98(a) disk to boot. I find the winme (a) disk lacking. The 98 disk give the option to start computer with cdrom support. Choose that and you can access tools on your cdrom. Or you could access your bios and choosing the boot sequence that lets your computer search for a cdrom before it searches for a disk in the a drive. Have your windows cd in place.
