can't install java installer

When I go to java in my control panel it says there is an update available. It starts going thru the process then I get an error 1723 message saying can't install the java installer. What does that mean?

The 'upgrade available' message may just be a periodic alert. You OS can't know if an upgrade is available without going to the java site. Anyway, go to www.java.com and click 'free java download'. It'll check your OS and show you any available update. Choose the offline download so you can save it and install later.
