Totally frustrated!!!! Not computer savy. Was due to update my Norton 2001 AntiVirus program, they won't up date that any more and was required to buy the 2005 version, which I did on-line to include on-line down load. I have tried to down load and install for 4 days now unsuccessfully. I'm able to download but when I go to install I get a mesg.- Set up has detected a previous Install or Uninstall has been completed but requires restart. Please restart your computer then launch setup again which just send me in a cicle of not getting it installed.I've gone to their customer service and automated spt. assistance which indicates I have a possible virus(registry?) w32.SoberD@mm - dwn loaded thie removal tool - indicated not found on my computer - says to install Norton AntiVirus, since I allready have 2001 I assume that's good - ran live update - ran a full syst. scan, nothing found????
Also ran a Symantec Security Check Virus detection program that took forever. Report indicated 65 files infected on my disk BUT NO VIRUSES WERE DETECTED IN MEMORY????? the viruses listed were Adwre types, w32.klez.H@mm, Trojan. Vundo, Trojan. Exure, Downloader.Haring thingies. What does all this mean and what the heck do I do? Is the preceeding things wwhat have been quarnteed, etc. in the past and not a problem if they aren't in memory?? The only thing I can think of to do is to uninstall the 2001 version and try but I don't want to risk it unless I know that is the answer. I hope there is a simple answer.
Very confused - Leaky
P.S. Forgot to mention - Can't call for assistance with out paying a fee. Why should I have to pay a fee for a program I've already paid for?

Go to symantecs web site and see if they have any write ups on the 2005 version and WindowsMe ,also symantec has a free app for making sure all remanants of Norton are removed from your PC ,for either reinstall or install of newer version(hawkins tool?) .Also look in Windows Explorer for and folders still listed pretaining to your previous version and you may have to delete the Virus Definintions folder manually ! I have Norton Utilities and it has a registry cleaner that will delete obsolete registry entries !
Good Luck Nick

Nick,
Thanks, ------- but I don't know how to do any of what you're suggesting. I can't find any of that stuff on their web. site. Guess I'm just dumb. Are you suggesting that I uninstall my 2001 version? If so, why didn't their download instrucions say that? What the heck is a "Hawkins" tool?

Well, I finally got my problem solved, no thanks to Norton. Tookd it to a local computer store/nice guy and for $56 took care of it. Apparently I had 10 gigabits of spyware on my registry(?) and a Trojan horse w32sober thingy that was identified but download soutions couldn't find? Anyway I'm back on line - yipee. He said that my biggest problem was not updating my spyware and adware programs at least once a week and running the scans. Apparently I've never udated!!!!! Boy, guess I learned something.
