can't get winME to reinstall

OS: win98 2nd ed.
CPU/Ram: 56ram

Bought laptop 5 yrs old from friend. She had installed winme from original win98. I lost the ME program. I purchased my own WinMe software. The software installs until it gets this message. "Can't continue with install because a previous version of winme has been detected. please install winMe upgrade." Is there such a thing and can I just uninstall Win98 2nd ed and start all over with WinME. Signed not so computer savy, Kevin.
