Help! Can't get to Safe Mode. It's a Thinkpad 600, PII, Windows ME. I've tried many keys - nothing seems to be working.
The reason I'm trying to get to Safe Mode is because I'm getting an error message. A blue screen shows up and the mouse pointer turns into a white bird (no joke) and there are two buttons for me to choose from. "Test" or "Restart". Restart just makes the whole thing happen again, Test seems to test the system. There are icons to represent different parts of my system, each one passes the 'test' but the System Board. That one gives the error message "Dev 001" "ERR 96" "FRU 3810". Then all I can do is restart (which brings me back to the initial error). Any ideas other than throwing this computer out the window???

ok..hold Ctrl on startup you should be able to get into the menu and choose safe mode.
did you scan your system for virus??

That is a possible virus. Have you held down the shift key as windows starts? That should make it go directly into safe mode.

It sounds like there is some sort of hardware problem going on. I would check on the IBM website (www.ibm.com/us/) for specific information on your particular model regarding the codes you are getting as I believe it may indicate a system board failure. Good Luck

Thank you. Unfortunately, I tried Ctrl and I tried Shift, but still got the same error screen. I went to the IBM site, but cannot navigate to any useful information. I can't believe my laptop can just stop working and everything I had on it is now gone (there's a lesson in back-up here...). If anyone has any more suggestions, please.........

Is this what you are getting?

It sounds like the motherboard is bad, but the hard drive still might be good.
have you tried a boot disk yet to see if you can access the drive?

It is possible that you might just need a backup battery. Here is a link to a service manual which can give you some information on the error messages you saw.http://www.pc.ibm.com/qtechinfo/LWIK-3SYPX2.html

smithdk - yes, that is the screen, but with different error messages.
Alex40 - THANK YOU a million times for that manual. It indicates the 192 Error is for the Fan, then recommends changing the backup battery first, before doing anything with the fan. I'm hoping changing the backup battery (this is the CMOS battery right?) will do the trick. Do you happen to know where one buys these types of batteries??
Thanks again,
bombay

I too am looking for this battery.Here is a link;

I am still not clear on how this battery is removed from it's protective cover
that has the leeds on it. There was on on Ebay but the guy is asking a rediculous shipping fee which I will not pay for a $7.00 battery.
I would appreciate knowing if the protective envelope can be reused? ANYONE?Hope this helps.

...this whole conversation is hilarious! The exact same thing happened to my laptop this weekend...what scares me is the timing...are we sure that it's not a virus? What are the odds that the exact same type of laptop would experience the exact same strange issues on the exact same weekend? I guess if they were manufactured close to the same time, their CMOS batteries might start failing close to the same time. By the way, that CMOS backup battery part number is 02K6502...IBM has them (800-388-7080), but they/ve jacked up the price to like $400 because they're considered old and "rare"...they suggested walking-in the battery to a battery specialty shop...should be a $12 battery. Hope this helps.

...here's a link to a place you can by the battery...$17.95.

I had the same problem this weekend with the same type of laptop. I was able to go in Windows but don't remember how because I tried different things after the test was made. I tried ESC after a test clock appears, The Shift, CTR, etc...
Sorry I can't provide any info on how to get in windows but I will try tonight and see what happens.
I got errors 192, 173 & 163.

Have 3 dead Stinkpad 600's here with the same '192' code.
I replaced 1 cmos battery and it worked.
On the second stinkpad it didn't.
God I hate IBM.Here is a link to where I bought the batteries
http://www.a2zsolutions.com/batteries/notebook/ibm_tp_600.htm
IBM ThinkPad 600, 600D, 600E, 600X (Real Time Clock) 3.6V 165mAH -
Item # FD-CR2025-WR . . . . $ 8.50

FYI...I took the CMOS backup battery out of the laptop and took it to a local retail "Batteries Plus" store. They replaced the battery are rebuilt the yellow shrink wrap with connectors...total cost: $3.65. Works great.

...one more thing...I don't know how much RAM you have (mine only had 64 MB) but I was able to double it to 128 for just $15...straight from IBM's web site, brand new & warrantied and FREE shipping...made a noticible improvement in an older laptop.

Alex40: thanks very much for the tip. After pulling out the backup battery, cutting the wires and soldering the wires on a new battery the laptop started up like nothing ever happened. I bought the battery (CR2025) in your-average-washing-machine-video-audio store for about $3.
