HELP
I thought tonight that I would re-format my lapto (been having a few probs with it) so off iI went and then realised that the authenticity code for my windows me had un-stuck its self from the disk ...grrrrr.... i`ve hunted high and low and can`t find it, I have original of win xp and win 98 I could use but now i cant get into my pc to do this as my floppy drive has broken so cannot use the boot disk HELP WHAT CAN I DO (apart from nuy a new floppy drive)

If you have an original XP CD it is bootable. You don't need a floppy. Get into bios and make sure CDROM is set as first boot device. insert the CD and reboot.

Of course that presumes your system is suitable for running XP. without any info on your system specs it's impossible to tell.

thanks for that, yes I do have an original XP disk but no serial number (its become unstuck from the case and ive lost it) so cant actually instal it, i have 98 and me also and have tried both

So let me get this straight. You have original disks for 98, ME and XP but no keys for any of them? and no working floppy drive?
Will the system boot into windows at all?
if so then go to www.magicaljellybean.com
run the file in windows to find your current key.Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day.

No i have keys for 98 and ME but not the XP disk, when i re-boot teh laptop it goes straight to the part where i need to enter in the key for XP, so can I put in a XP or 98 disk then and re-boot or will this not work, thanks so much for your help

Not sure. Try inserting the XP disk and reboot. you should get an option to format/partition. Delete the current partition, create a new one. You will need to format in FAT32 in order for ME to instal. I'm not sure the XP disk will let you do that. You might need to get something like Ultimate Bootdisk which is a bootable CD with a wide variety of diagnostic tools including partitioning/formatting

Thanks will try that in the meantime I have just tried inserting a win 98 disk and it goes through the process of installing then tells me I have a different version on windows (XP) already installed and cannot instal 98 also I have managed to get to a dos prompt a: but it will not let me use the command "format c:" it says invalid etc etc, anyway will try what you said thanks

"You will need to format in FAT32 "
If the XP drive is partitioned as NTFS, you would need to use fdisk (not format) to remove it and to create a FAT32 one - - then you may format.
Win98 & ME consider NTFS 'invalid etc. etc.'
Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Have now managed to install win 98se and ME upgrade but now I am unable to get critical downloads from Microsoft site, it goe to the scan and then says there is an error, have looked all trough the troubleshooting section to no avail, any suggestions welcome

"says there is an error"
... like what? Hard to make suggestions when the problem isn't really defined.Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

Thats all it days, "there is an error" there is no more infor than tha, sorry but thats is i`m affraid

Try and live with it then, I suppose

If the laptop 'came with xp installed' the cd key is usually stuck onto the laptop itself. Have you looked under it?
