If you have an original XP CD it is bootable. You don't need a floppy. Get into bios and make sure CDROM is set as first boot device. insert the CD and reboot.

Of course that presumes your system is suitable for running XP. without any info on your system specs it's impossible to tell.

So let me get this straight. You have original disks for 98, ME and XP but no keys for any of them? and no working floppy drive?

Will the system boot into windows at all?
if so then go to www.magicaljellybean.com
run the file in windows to find your current key.

No i have keys for 98 and ME but not the XP disk, when i re-boot teh laptop it goes straight to the part where i need to enter in the key for XP, so can I put in a XP or 98 disk then and re-boot or will this not work, thanks so much for your help

Not sure. Try inserting the XP disk and reboot. you should get an option to format/partition. Delete the current partition, create a new one. You will need to format in FAT32 in order for ME to instal. I'm not sure the XP disk will let you do that. You might need to get something like Ultimate Bootdisk which is a bootable CD with a wide variety of diagnostic tools including partitioning/formatting

"You will need to format in FAT32 "

If the XP drive is partitioned as NTFS, you would need to use fdisk (not format) to remove it and to create a FAT32 one - - then you may format.

Win98 & ME consider NTFS 'invalid etc. etc.'

"says there is an error"

... like what? Hard to make suggestions when the problem isn't really defined.

If the laptop 'came with xp installed' the cd key is usually stuck onto the laptop itself. Have you looked under it?
