My computer started running slow and now I can't download any type of programs off the internet. I have Windows ME and my IE is v.6, I receive emails fine, I can browse the internet no problem, I can print from it, I just can't download anything. Tried to update windows and it won't let me do that either! It's been 4 months now...HELP!

So what happens when you try to download something? Do you get an error message? Does your system freeze? Does the download start and then hang?

Go to control panel/internet options/security tab, and click on custom level. There will be something that says downloads, make sure there is a dot in the place that says enable.

the fact your computer is running slow and some exe funtions are not functioning make me think virus.if you can goto housecall anti virus and run free online scan.
you can try running your own virus scanner allso. but it might be disabled by virus.try above soultions but do the scan allso

Try this. Click start--run--type regedit and click ok. Doubleclick on each of these:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Plugins

After doubleclicking the Plugins key you'll see a key named Extension underneath. Right click on the Extension key and choose delete. Don't worry it's safe to delete it. Then close the registry. Now see if you can download. If not restart the pc and then try it. Let us know.

Note: i'm referring to the Extension key under Plugins NOT the Extensions key under Internet Explorer. Don't delete the wrong one, they aren't the same.
