... I've tried Nero, EasyCD, and NTI Pro. I've actaully gone so far as to swap out the MB, memory, processors, hard drive, cd/dvd drive, and cd-rw with no luck. Every time it starts to read from the source CD (whether it be the cd/dvd or directly from the burner) it fails on a read error.
Certainly looks like something WinME specific - can anyone shed some light on this?
My current system is a PIII 1 GigHz, ASUS CUV4X-E mb, 512 megs ram, Creative 12x/40x DVD/CD, Yamaha 16x 10x 40x CD-RW, GeForce3, Maxtor 60 Gig ATA 100 hd. I would restress that all of the above components have changed with exactly the same problem.

gidda,y
have you tried cleaning the cd
what cd are you copying
if you are copying p/1or2 you need cdclone
have you made an image first
keep trying it will come to you and you will learn

What is ur cd reader? If u use DVD room...ggg
..some dvd room have problem w/ reading cd.
Try to use ur cdwritter to read to hd and then copy back to cd.

Thanks for everyones responses...
I even have the problem trying to do a cd to cd copy from just the Yamaha burner. Maybe I should pick up a cheap CD rom only and try from that...
The CD I was trying to backup was the Age of Empires "The Conquerors" Expansion. I even had problems doing a MixedMode version of it as well.
I haven't reinstalled WinME yet as I'd rather avoid that but I may have no choice... any other ideas? I'll see if I can find CloneCD.

Another update...
I just tried CD Clone and that also bombed out (on a different cd). The error is:
"Writing to cd failed: HARDWARE ERROR: NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION (4:0x08: 0x03)."
This was again trying to do a cd to cd copy. I am really suspecting some Win me driver/vxd but I am lost - any ideas? Much thanks in advance.

Try this program: Blindwrite Suite. This program can back up just about any program. It detects what type of write method was used. Depending on this, it may take some time. It will make an image file on you hard drive and then you can burn it to a cd. Blind Read and Blind Write come seperately, I think, or in the suite. I used this for American McGee's Alice. I can't remember if it passed the key check, but it installed fine from the backed up cd. If it is an issue with being able to use the disk to CD Check for playing the game, then just get the CD Crack (assuming there is one, but if not try a generic crack). You can find more information regarding removing the CD Key Check at www.gamecopyworld.com Pick a mirror and type in game index in the search. Scroll down and find your program. If it isn't listed, look on the right for a generic CD Key Crack. When you find what you are looking for, don't get discouraged if you don't get the file in the first mirror download. I find that the mirrors farther down on the list tend to have the file more often.
I hope this helps some. I like NERO regardless, but sometimes it is necessary to look at other programs. If you have used Nero, make sure you have the upgrade to generation 5.5 (Current 5.5.1.8 @ www.ahead.de)
Hope it works. I get a lot accomplished in this arena, let me know if it doesn't work.

Thanks for the info, Bashton...
To be honest, my bigger concern right now is I seem to have some kind of driver / VXD issue with Win Me. I effectively have all new hardware and the fact that I can't do cd to cd copies of any disk is troubling...
Right now, my DVD drive is secondary master and my Yamaha burner is secondary slave - both with DMA enabled. Is it wortwhile to switch them around and turn off DMA?

Dont copy disk to disk, its rarely sucessful.Even new burners cant write as fast as it reads, hence errors of all kinds.Make a image to the drive instead and burn from that.

I know that on Nero, I used to get a warning message that I was coping on the same IDE channel (1 I believe) and I would usually bypass this without any problems.
DMA doesn't seem to be an issue with mine. When I install systems, I install the drive that will be used most as Master. For instance, in your situation, I would install the CDr as Master and the DVD as slave. There is no evidence that this is important, more an aesthetic thing. Have you tried putting the burner or the dvd on the primary ide channel?
Also, have you checked your bios settings? What is the seeking mode when you boot. Does it look for a device? Do you have anything with regard to UltraDMA settup in the bios? You may need to Flash you bios to resolve this issue (NOT RECOMMENDED FOR A NOVICE - of course we all have to start sometime!) Send me more info and I will evaluate it. With regard to the bios get explicit details.

I do have the latest version of my bios - it's the March release for the Asus CUV4X-EX ACPI Rev 1003 with the VIA Pro 133a chipset.
Ultra DMA is auto detected in the bios.
Very strange...
