Try rebooting in safe-mode and doing a scandisk. If there are no problems or you still can't defrag then.....Go to the HD manufacturers home page and try downloading a HD utility. Run it and see if there are any errors. if it is a S.M.A.R.T. drive and it fails those tests then you will need a new HD.

About 30 seconds late on my first response!...but,anyway...
If it is a S.M.A.R.T drive,get Active SMART Monitor for free;
"Active SMART Monitor is a full-featured hard drive failure-prediction agent. Sitting in the system tray, it monitors hard disks and alerts you to impending failure. The program uses Self Monitoring and Reporting Technology (S.M.A.R.T.) built into all new hard disks, and can predict failures on your hard drives. A host of alerting features include email, local pop-up messages, net messages, and event logging, while using no system resources.

http://www.russelltech.com/ComputerTips/ScandiskDefrag.htm You probably have too many things running in the background, but here is a url that will tell you that its ok to run in safe mode, I have done it, but just to check it out, I do not need to run in safe mode, I have no problems defrag and scan disk in windows me.

Read my other two responses...quite helpful,I thought.
Just wanted to "stress" the point that you CAN defrag in safe mode,and didn't want Jasa to get the impression that Jonas was correct.I saw no need to look for a link to prove a point that we all know to be true anyway....you just took it the wrong way.

You *can* defragment in safe mode, and it is the best way to go if you are having problems.
