Can't run Scandisk -tells me other programs are running in background but they are NOT. (Screensaver, virus scan off, all other programs shut down).

Also can't defrag hard drive. When I try, it just sets there at 0%.

Have tried System Restore but message says that computer can not be restored.

I have a firewall- ZoneAlarm Pro. Have run a full virus scan (McAfee) and no viruses were found. Have run Disk Clean, Window Washer, Ad-aware and Spybot. Also have used PC Bug Doctor but nothing fixes this problem.

I've deleted a lot of "junk" (MP's, mpegs, graphics files, etc.) from computer and really need to do some maintenance. It's been running a little sluggish and programs are locking up more than I'd like to put up with.

I am NOT what you'd call an "advanced" user, but am not a beginner. Am not comfortable getting into files and making changes. Any help in "layman's terms" would be greatly appreciated.

Go here and get EndItAll 2, this will help you scandisk / defrag etc.

www.docsdownloads.com/enditall.htm

Or scandisk/degfrag in safe mode, press F8 on bootup to get into option menu.

Thanks, I'll give that a try. I downloaded ScanDefrag and it was finally able to get through Scandisk but it took FOREVER. Never did get past 0% on the defrag.

Then there's still the problem with not being able to do a System Restore........

LLB57, End It All may help. Another thing to try is 'Safe Mode'. A minimum of things are allowed (drivers, etc.) there and often that allows you to run maintenance items.
Since you report slugish operation, I suspect that you have a lot of malware-spyware running in the background. Find-delete that and your problem will likely go away.
If I were you, I would TEMPORARILY disable Restore prior to cleaning in order to allow access to otherwise protected Windows files.

Press Alt-Ctrl-Delete to see what is running. If there's something you don't want running, highlight it, and select End Task.

Go to Start/Run, type msconfig and select the Startup tab. See what runs at startup. If there's something you don't want running, uncheck the box.

Nothing's worked so far.

And now I can't even get into safe mode! I've tried both F8 and the ctrl key after restarting, but no luck.

Nearing end of rope..................

LLB57, maybe time to do a maintence reinstall ! Stick your ME CD in the drive and doubleclick setup.exe. As long as you do not format and install to same location, it will just fix up the system, albiet an hour of pain and finding your CD key.

Best

Thanks, Jubalsams. I ended up going into DOS and doing a scanreg/fix and that did the trick!! If it hadn't, I was going to try your suggestion next.

Thanks to everyone for your time and suggestions. It's great to be able to get input from people with more knowledge than what I have. :)

AZguy,

First, you need a startup disk (EBD). Directions, for making one here. Descriptions of the command line switches, for scanreg and scanregw are here. Use the startup disk, to start your computer, and choose minimal when asked......... I'll bet, if you looked in Start..."Help", you might find some of this in there. Not certain, as it's not on my compter, and I can't check it out. "Help" that is.

Good Luck,
CrazyOne

p.s. That's the way LLb57 did it. By what they wrote anyway.

Thanks, Crazy One. I was able to fix the problem by downloading Power Defrag. It works for now.
