Been there...the problem is most likely connected to a problem called 'backweb', which is designed to trickle down ads from the web. I experienced the same problem you are and thought I would never find an answer. I did...go to the web and download a shareware program called 'powerdefrag'. It is one slick piece of software!

Powerdefrag stops the booting process before windows comes up, thereby preventing backweb from running. It then offers the options available. When it comes to defrag-ing the drive, talk about super speed. To register it costs $30, but it is worth every dime. I believe the site is 'powerdefrag.com'. If not, go to google.com and search dor 'powerdefrag'. You will be one happy man!

good luck.

When you say the problem is caused by a problem called 'backweb'. But when l do the defrag, l am not connected to the web and not running any programs apart from the defrag.

Any suggestions

Thanks

Hi Steve.

You have to run Scan and Defrag in Safe Mode.

The reason it stops and starts over again is because any programs that are running in the background when you boot up interfere, making Scan or Defrag start over again.

When you start the computer in Safe Mode, those background programs aren't launched so they can't interfere.

To start your computer in Safe Mode, press and hold the F8 key upon startup, before the windows splash screen appears.

Then choose Safe Mode from the menu.

Then run Scan and Defrag from there.

Take care,

Linda

first, ctl-alt-delete and see if 'backweb' is running. if so, it is pinging the harddrive and preventing scandisk from doing it's thing. Trust me, I was there with the same problem last week.

Secondly, Linda is correct with safe mode. It prevents programs,including backweb, from interfering with scandisk.

The reason I like powerdefrag is that it does much more than defrag your drive. I have seen posts that suggest that scandisk creates as many problems as it corrects. Don't know this to be true. When you have the time, go to powerdefrag.com and take a look. Better yet, download the 30-day free trial and try it. I just finished registering my version for $40.

good luck!

Morris

Just as a FYI, Powerdefrag can not "do much more than defrag your drive"

It does nothing more than run what ever DEFRAG.exe program is installed on your PC. I also "believe" that it runs with optimize programs UNselected, meaning if your are also running Taskmon, it is a waste of time.

You can also accomplish the same thing by the following:

Copy the text below (between the asterisked lines) into Notepad, and save it as "Defrag.reg" (with the quotes).

**************************************
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur
rentVersion\RunOnceEx]
"Flags"=dword:00000003
"Title"="Defrag at Startup"

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\Cur
rentVersion\RunOnceEx\Defrag]
"Cmd"="||DEFRAG.EXE /ALL"

*********************************

Any time you wish to defrag, doubleclick on this file and it will be added to the RunOnce key in the registry. Then reboot and the defrag will start the next time you reboot the PC, before any other apps are loaded.

Amd yes, scandisk run with the AutoFix option "can" cause problems.

Response #1 covers most angles on the subject.. The most common problem is programs running in the background. That link addresses this and offers many suggestion to correct it.

WhitPhil's idea is a new one on me. [im aint 2 brite] Im gonna check it out right now. Thanks for the reg file

Have a look at this post, points 2,4,8,9,10. Make sure you visit Pac's and uncheck lots of things in msconfig to sort the interruption problem.

http://www.burzurq.com/forum/trevtweak.html
You can also use a freeware program called End it All which you get here
http://home.ptd.net/~don5408/toolbox/enditall/

See RM’s resource post on this topic as above

The above methods, especially the first link, should solve the problem permanently. However, on some PCs there may be a particularly well hidden program causing a problem. In that case, you can also try running scandisk in Dos as described here
http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/13355.html response 3

(If you don't know how to create a bootdisk or startup disk:
1. Open Add/Remove Programs properties in Control Panel.
2. Click the Startup Disk tab, and then click Create Disk.
3. Follow the instructions on the screen. )

Or, you can follow the Microsoft advice on how to clean boot before using scandisk or defragmenter

Just run it in safe mode,or get the FREE Diskeeper-lite.You don't have to close ANYTHING running in the background,and it's just as fast as running/getting to defrag in safe mode,or closing background apps and running ME's defrag.

That's my story and I'm stickin' to it!

you dont have to download anything. all you need to do is reboot your comp in safe mode by pressing F8 when its restarting and selecting safe mode on the options screen.

the reason it starts over is because programs are writing to the hard disk in safe mode only one program is running windows explorer.it might start over a few times but thats ok.also dont let your screensaver come on when defragmenting.i recomend turning it off.

Be careful with your safe mode recommendations.Although I firmly believe in it,I,and you,are exposing ourselves to vile persecution here.
