Comment:

When I use Internet Explorer 5 or IE 5.5 and visit Microsoft or MSNBC's site
I get a "Page cannot be found " display. I go to properties and I see the
URL is posted as this :

"res://C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm"

as opposed to any other page that I access which has the standard
"http://www.etc.etc" url. "Page cannot be found" also comes up on any
bookmarks or update tabs that I click on that has MS or Microsoft in the
URL. It is not a virus, to the best of my knowledge, as I have run a couple
of updated virus programs. I was using Win 98 but just upgraded to Win ME.
The problem still persists. Any ideas or were to go to find out and fix this
problem? Thanx

I've e-mailed you this dll. Back up your copy and then overwrite yours with the one that I've zipped up. I'm running WinME with IE5.5 and not having this trouble. This dll is a "show docs" dll.

i've the same problem, too. but i've the following equipment:

- Win2000 Prof and IE 5.01.

the problem is persist with netscape or IE. Now, when i tried a ping in the command box over a full qualified dns name, then i've the same problem. now, the point of view is, the problem is down in the dns or ip configuration. it's possible too, that files that comes with the IE, are made a corrupt ip configuration.

after a few day, i had looking in the newsgroups to find people with the same problem. on the www.dejanews.com it's have 88 message, but nothing with a possible way for eliminating the mistake!

thanks and greetings
bruno

This is from Bugsi - CORRECTION / RETRACTION
Yes I had just installed webcelerator -
However an Advertising Banner program that
turned very aggressive turned out to be the problem and when I deleted it the problem ended. The Acelerator is absolutely terrific.

Thank you and apologies for me please, jumping to conclusions - I was also just about ready to use a sledge hammer on my computer. hee hee. Thank You.

Same problem here, no web access, Win98,
IE 5.5 gives C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\SHDOCLC.DLL/dnserror.htm

Netscape3.0 gives- unable to create network socket error.

Able to ping sites, but browsers fail on the dns failure. So far 3 days of digging for a fix or source of the problem - nothing yet. Except a headache ....

replace the dll file from your CD with windows 95/98/ME. It is as simple as running SFC on WIN 98 and entering the proper information. With windows ME its a completely diffrent story... cross your fingers and pray

But when I rebooted my system it had changed back again. Can't find the problem either. I am connecting to my Isp with a dialup shortcut and then opening IE5.5 and all is fine.....help if you can

Ditto . . . same thing. I cannot access via AOL browser but CAN via Internet Explorer! I'm using (or was using, until I uninstalled it) a web accelerator called Surf Express. Per chance, anyone else using the same (or similar) software. There appears to be a correlation.
Anyway, went to Microsoft downloads and "shdoclc.dll" ISN'T listed for downloads. Anyone have a good solution. File is NOT on my 98 SE or 98 discs. Thanks!

I work at an ISP and we have had numerous problems with clients and the shdoclc.dll file. We had one individual who could log on but not browse at all. When we asked him to rename the 'show-docs' file to shdoclc.old. He can now connect everytime without an error! While we don't usually recommend changing file names so they don't run... we are watching this closely to see if disabling this file will cause any real problems except not being able to show the error docs from IE 5.5. One thing we noticed, the .dll file stated that the version was Windows2000 (under properties), but this was on a Windows98 machine. My guess is that a program the client loaded overwrote this dll recently. One of the things he just purchased and loaded which may or may not be the culprit is MS Streets and trips 20001.

I just got this lame error too!!!! I have 2 machines, a laptop and desktop. I did not have the desktop connected to the net, however I did have the laptop connected. I needed to download a large email file onto my desktop. So, I unhooked the laptop and connected the desktop to download the file. Now, I have tried to connect the laptop back to the internet and I am getting this aggravating file. This all happened within a 20 minute time period!!!
