If you can't get into your control panel and looking at your previous post I would suggest trying -

Start >> RUN >> and typing >>
scanreg /restore (with the space after reg) and try to pick a date prior to your problem,
if this is possible.

If Kernel32.dll is the problem, then yyour best bet is to reinstall Windows, but first try uninstalling IE and reinstalling it. A format though would be your bets option, as it resolves the problems of Kernel to reinstallin Win

" the repair IE6 still didn't work"

Didn't work how? Didn't work... got an error message? Or didn't work... didn't help anything?

If it didn't work... got an error message, post back. Maybe you can reinstall IE 6 from Windows update setup files in safe mode (big maybe... but maybe).

The application or one of its DLLs may have overflowed an internal temporary buffer.

That error still makes it sound like something is hooked onto explorer/internet explorer and breaking your OS.

I'd have to have a look at your add/remove programs list... or your msinfo32 file would be even better... to really see what could be causing this.

If you don't mind me looking at what you have installed... do this for me:

Boot into safe mode.
Go to start>>run>>msinfo32
System information should come up.

If it comes up properly, click on File>>save as.
Save as ryan.nfo to someplace you can find it again (like your desktop).
Move it to a floppy.

If it does not come up properly, have a look at the instructions at the bottom of this post for startup.log.

If you can't get into My Computer without error, you can do this from a command prompt. To do this:

Go to start>>run>>command.
You will be at a c:\windows\desktop prompt.
Put a formatted floppy in the drive and type:

copy ryan.nfo a:\

Let it copy. Write protect the floppy and bring it over to this computer.
Attach it to an email and send it to me at:

junknewgrl@hotmail.com

I will take a look and see if anything pops up at me. Then I will post here.

Deal?

STARTUP.LOG

If this isn't something you feel comforatable doing... or it doesn't work... how about running a small program that analyzes your startup programs and posting the results here.

If this would be a better solution for you, go to Reticlated Toys:

http://home.earthlink.net/~rmbox/Reticulated/Toys.html

Download, unzip, and run startup.zip/startup.com (the 4th download). It will generate a text file. Copy and paste the contents here.

If you are not able to copy/paste or use email on the broken computer... you can save the Notepad instance (startup.log) to your desktop and copy it to a floppy using the instructions I gave for the NFO file.

copy startup.log a:\

Should do the trick.

Write protect the floppy (to save the working computer if this one has a virus) then move it over to the working computer and copy/paste it here.

You could also type msinfo32 in the start>run box then:
software enviroment>startup programs>edit>select all>edit>copy, and paste the results here.
I'm with newglr, there might be something there.
Maybe not but, it's worth a look.

REM DOSSTART.BAT is run whenenver you choose "Restart the computer
REM in MS-DOS mode" from the Shutdown menu in Windows. It allows
REM you to load programs that you might not want loaded in Windows,
REM (because they have functional equivalents) but that you do
REM want loaded under MS-DOS. The two primary candidates for
REM this are MSCDEX and a real mode driver for the mouse you ship
REM with your system. Commands that you want present in both Windows
REM and MS-DOS should be placed in the Autoexec.bat in the
REM \Image directory of your reference server. Please note that for
REM MSCDEX you will need to load the corresponding real-mode CD
REM driver in Config.sys. This driver won't be used by Windows 98
REM but will be available prior to and after Windows 98 exits.
REM
REM This file is also helpful if you want to F8 boot into MS-DOS 7.0
REM before Windows loads and access the CD-ROM. All you have to do
REM is press F8 and then run DOSSTART to load MSCDEX and your real
REM mode mouse driver (no need to remember the command line parameters

REM
REM - You MUST explicitly specify the CD ROM Drive Letter for MSCDEX.
REM - The string following the /D: statement must explicitly match

Did this start after upgrading IE or installing a piece of software? Did you run any sort of registry cleaner?

There doesn't appear to be anything weird in your startup log. Pretty clean actually except for the "Getting to know arcview" software environment variables. And I would love to know what c:\program files\common files\autode~1 is... But I don't think either of those is causing your errors.

I wonder if shdocvw.dll, mshtml.dll or browseui.dll didn't get updated correctly when you upgraded to IE 6. But if that were the case, you should have gotten an error message when you tried to repair IE 6.

I am at a loss.

There are three things to try:

1. Roll Internet Explorer back to IE 5.5. Boot into safe mode to do this, just to make sure nothing is going to interfere with the rollback.

You can do this from add/remove programs in the control panel. When you click on Microsoft Internet Explorer 6 and click the add/remove button, you will be offered some choices. Choose the uninstall to previous version choice. Reboot when prompted. Cross fingers.

3. Reinstall IE 6 if possible. This will have to be done in normal mode as you will have to be connected to the internet. This also may be kind of a pain in the *ss without Explorer working correctly, but there should be an ie6setup.exe file in your c:\windows update setup files folder or c:\windows\windows update setup files. One of the two.

Does search work for you? Or do you get the same error message when you open it? I'm guessing you will get the same message, but if not do a search for:

ie6setup.exe

It should find one in c:\windows update setup files. Connect to the net, then double click on the ie6setup.exe you found.

Follow the onscreen instructions to do a typical setup and reinstall IE 6.

If you cannot search... Connect to the net and try this:

Go to start>>run>>command.
Type each of these commands pressing enter after each one:

cd..
cd..
cd window~1
ie6setup.exe

It may or may not work. Not sure. It's a 32bit program, so starting it in a 16bit environment may not work.

2. An over the top installation to repair whatever is broken here. Before starting the over the top install, you will need to rename some files and remove some registry keys. The instructions for this can be found in this Microsoft Knowledgebase article:

How to Remove Internet Explorer 6.0 or Outlook Express 6.0 Before You Reinstall Windows (Q312474)

After following the instructions from the article above you can then start setup from c:\winodws\options\install if you installed ME or c:\windows\options\cabs if your OEM company (Dell, HP, etc...) installed ME.

You should not lose any settings. It should just repair ME.

Let me know how you get on. And if any of this fixes your issue.

None that are worthy cept the lack of the usual questions regarding system specs, recent activity prior to the problem (just out of the blue?) Didn't see any reference to Office XP in the restore bak's. Heavy graphical user. Steps taken prior to the post to remedy the situation ie; programs added, removed etc. Detailed (exact full text) of the kernel32 error message. Type faultlog in the search> files or folders named box.
Don't seem good.
I'm at a loss.

You know... When this started might be really really helpful. As would be the faultlog.

ctfmon is in the startup group... but I don't see any of the rest of the Office startup stuff. Wonder where it is?

Ryan - When did this start? Do you actually run Office XP or not?
