Cannot See Icons

I can't see my icons. For instance, if I go into control panel, it will recognize that there are 32 objects, but I cannot see any of them. Nothing under properties (or at least as far as I have tried) has done nothing for it. Is it just me, or is ME sucky? I have never had these kinds of problems with any other computer that I have ever had. Please give me suggestions because I'm on the verge of going back to windows 98.
