Comment:

I have been trying to scan disk and defrag.. computer is very slow to boot up and frequently freezes.

I have used ctrl+alt+del to end tasks of everything except explorer and systray. But Scandisk does not get all the way through and keeps restarting.

I have seen a suggestion to use safe mode but I press F8 or Ctrl during boot up but it doesnt go into Safe mode.

The timing can be tricky to get to Safe Mode sometimes...you try the Delete key? What kind of PC?

Or,with a Bootdisk...

From the Startup menu, choose Minimum Boot.
At the command prompt, type scandisk, and then press ENTER

Remove spyware with Adaware and Spybot programs.Every time you run the programs agree to make the corrections the programs recommend. You will delete files and registry entries from malware etc. by the hundreds if the computer is used on the web.Update the programs regularly.Run scandisk and defrag. To improve the defrag you must keep some room on the hard drive.Try removing programs from the Add/Remove Programs to get back to about 15% of free hard drive space at all times.Good luck.

You may want to start by reading the above link.

Then go to Start/Run , type in "msconfig" <enter>. Select Diagnostic startup, apply,ok.
You should get a menu on bootup. I believe one of the chooses is safemode.
You'll have to go back to msconfig to change back to normal startup.
Also if you are now starting up in Selective startup. You'll want to go through and see/make a note of what is checked and unchecked so you can restore you're original settings. Good luck!
...Turn off your screen saver and try before you do anything. (control panel, display, screensaver, none)

To get into safe mode, hold down Control as soon as you boot the PC and keep it held down until a menu comes up written in DOS type print. Select the safe mode option and press return. When in safe mode, do the scandisk and defrag. The other suggestions above are good, too.

tried all the suggestions in response 1-5 and in safe mode my scan disk is still hanging up saying "tried to restart 10 times etc etc". I do not have a screen saver or anything else that I can find that would hold it up. Help?!

Thanks flash for the response. I was in safe mode and made sure all programs were off. The scan disk would get 80% the way through the process and freeze up. It did this 4 times in a row. Any idea what could be causing this?
Thanks for your help.
