OS Windows ME..... Cannot run Scandisk or Defrag. When trying to run Scandisk or Defrag, each will complete appox 10% then start over. I have shutdown running programs and tried running each within windows. Also, I have tried running each in Safe Mode with the same results of each starting over and never completing. What can I do to correct the problem?

Midnight...can you get to the configuration utility? If you can then try disabling everything but the most necessary components. Then reboot and try again.. Sounds as though something is accessing your drive at regular intervals. Do you have av software running? This may cause some problems.

Thanks for the reply. I have tried to run scandisk & Defrag with everything turned off except IExplorer and Systray. Have removed quciklaunch items and items from the toolbar. The computer restarts during Scandisk & Defrag and will not complete.

Make sure your screensaver is off before attempting either.

Thanks for all the help and info. After booting with a Win ME Floppy, I was able to run Scandisk from C:\>prompt. Thanks again, Midnight

Midnight,
Try booting to safe mode and you will usually be able to run Scandisk and Defrag when it will not in normal windows.
Get to safe mode by hitting F8 on boot up, before the Windows boot logo appears.
