Comment: Long story short; When I try to re-install Windows ME on my computer after about 20 minutes I get this message: "SUWIN caused a General Protection Fault in module VERX.dll at 0002:24AE." I have tried the installation five times with the same results. Anyone know of a work around for this. If you need the long story I will be glad to post that information also. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Boot the computer with a dos Windows ME diskette and format the hard drive. format C: Run setup from the cdrom. D: setup Install the final version of all software(like no beta version of Media Player or IE 6) after Windows ME setup is completed. Good luck.

Reply: (edit)Thanks for that. I really wanted to avoid a format if possible. This drive has so much on it that I would like to keep. What caused this in the first place was that I trying to restore the drive with a backup set that was falted and I was not aware of that. Windows had ceased to operate. Do you know of a way to do a backup from DOS that would retain the Windows registry as well as all of the other information on that hard drive. When I look at the drive contents with explorer it appears that everything is there but Windows will not run. Thanks

Reply: (edit)"When I look at the drive contents with explorer it appears that everything is there but Windows will not run" If it will not run, how are you using explorer? Have you tried booting off the startup floppy & running regscan /restore from an A: prompt?

Reply: (edit)Darn good point jam. Actually, I purchased another cheap hard drive and installed ME on it. With both drives in the machine I was able to view the contents of the original hard drive (which is drive d:). I even created shortcuts to some of the programs on the old hard drive and am running them from the new one. I have yet to find one that is corrupted as is Windows. No, I did not even think to run regscan/restore from the A: prompt. I will try that later today if I can get all my chores done, and if I don't get to it today I will give it a go tomorrow. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Don't do that: scanreg /restore ... is preferable a little dyslexia, I suspect ; ) We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Reply: (edit)Why don't you copy what you want to keep to your second hard drive, then format the first one and reinstall, then copy back? There is a SUWIN error page here http://www.generation.net/~hleboeuf/suwin.htm but it might not be of relevance to your particular problem If you do a reinstall look at the homepage link on this response for advice on setting ME up properly.
