Hi All,
I have tried and tried again t defrag the Me version to no avail. Everytime I do it keeps restaring and evetually comes up with the error that "Windows was writting to the disk and has been restarted 10 times as a result of it and it then asks me if I want to retry. This doesnt work either. I did Ctrl/Alt/Del and had only appropriate progy's running. Any suggestions???

you can also try pressing the shift key,
or pressing f8 at the starting windows
message.
then choose safemode from the list.

1. How do I boot into Safe Mode?

a) Push the Start button on the PC.

b) When the machine gets to the second Black and
White screen hold down the F8 key

c) When the Windows Startup Menu appears choose
Option 3- Safe Mode. Hit Enter.

d) Machine will then boot into Safe Mode.

e) Please note that in Safe Mode your PC will operate
in 16 colors only and in 640X480 resolution only.
(Safe Mode is for Troubleshooting Only.

You didn't happen to have a cd left in the cd-rom drive did you? Defrag used to give me the same message and I think that was the problem.

This is one of the most frequently asked questions on this forum. Do you have Norton AV running?

The search function on this site sucks, but you might try it anyway and look for past solutions.

Turn off all possible background programs, especially PC Health and all forms of scheduled tasks. Here's how:
Disable unnecessary programs in startup by going to Start, Run, type msconfig press enter, go to Startup tab, uncheck any unnecessary programs, especially PCHealth, Load power profile (usually there twice), Scheduling agent, anything that mentions scheduling. Look at two sites for more on this: http://www2.whidbey.net/djdenham/Uncheck.htm and http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

Hi Rob,

I had the same problem, i downloaded the trial version Norton utility's 2001 and used speeddisk, it worked great. After that you should be able to defrag with the defrag from ME.

Best Regards,

Jan Kersten
