I am unable to connect to the internet in Windows ME with my Conexant SoftK56 PCI Modem. I have setup the dial-up networking 1000 times, but continue to have the following problem.
The modem dials, sounds as if it is connecting, possibly connects for a split second and then redials and starts the entire process over. It does this repeatedly until I cancel the process.

This could be a static problem with your phone line. Just a small amout can disconnect your modem. I would check you lines as a first step.

You could aslo look for init strings for the modem. Have u recently changed ISP's?
Double check your dial-in number, 3 few comma's after the number can also help things. Try turning error control off as well (modem properties>connection tab>advanced).

Thanks for your suggestions!
I will try using commas after the dialup number. We've already had the phone line checked and there doesn't seem to be a problem.
If all else fails, I will just have to bite the bullet and reinstall Windows as fred suggested.
Thanks again! :)
