Im having problems burning cds on windows me in my f drive. When i googled the s---, i was amazed that i found a bunch of people with the exact same symptoms as me, which are:

When i try to burn cd: (ive tried mp3 and wav)

1: Computer doesnt detect cd in drive

2: Computer freezes

3: Windoes ME lol worst system ever

I found a bunch of people who had these 3 things, and ive nobody who replied to their post had an answer. Any suggestions besides trashing my f---ing computer or upgrading to xp, which im probably gonna do soon?

yep, it's ME

1) Normally a CD-RW drive gone bad. Little finger prints on the underside of CD's cause the laser to over power and burn out over time, or the closed box gets too hot. When a blank CD is inserted, as it can not read data, it goes to the "test track" and attempts to do a "calibration" write, which fails because the write laser has burn out or is too weak (some CD-R and CD-RW might still work). So it can not "see" that a CD is inserted in the drive. Yet it will read a CD with data on it. That is not a Windows ME problem but a simple failing hardware problem.

Resolution. Replace CD-RW drive with a new one. They are cheap and only last about a year anyway.

2) Well, it is that time of year most places, just too cold to work. Memory modules start to fail. Malware bugs like virus, worms, trojans, spyware/adware start to crawl out of the Internet P2P woodwork looking for a wave to ride into a hot place to infest. And most people don't bother with Security updates, AV program and Spyware/Adware scans and just neglect system security until their system slows down and rolls over with its little feet up.

Resolution: Get serious about Internet Security, Anti-Virus scans, Spyware/Adware scans, avoiding P2P sites, and keep a clean warm system.

3) Except for a few "extras" Microsoft threw in for large customers (PCHealth, Automatic Updates) and marketing "talking points" (TaskMonitor, System Restore), Windows ME is by far better than Windows 95/98/98se (after a few Windows Update fixes and a few changes). And of course at almost five years age it is getting old and Microsoft has quit supporting it, and the much newer XP/XP Pro is better (after SP1, SP2, and other fixes).

I agree with JackG...WinME is a decent OS & is better than the previous versions of Win9x. It just has to be properly tweaked.

Before you go blaming WinME, how about explaining how you have your drives configured? It's possible that your burner is simply on it's way out, but the wrong IDE configuration is another possibility.

You should avoid pairing up 2 HDDs on the same cable, or 2 optical drives on the same cable.

Here's the optimal setup for 4 devices:

Primary master = HDD w/OS
Primary slave = CD or DVD-ROM
2ndary master = CD or DVD burner
2ndary slave = 2nd HDD

Always use the master or slave jumper settings...NEVER use cable select. Always use 80-wire IDE ribbon cables for both channels.

If you only have 3 devices, the above device configuration should be same, minus the device you don't have. For instance, if you don't have a 2nd HDD, the other drives should stay as-is, but there would be no 2ndary slave. If you don't have a CD or DVD-ROM drive, the other drives should stay as-is, but there would be no primary slave.

Omg u two better be fking kidding me. Here, let me learn ya'z a lesson about ME. B4 i knew s--- about computers, when i first got this computer, i heard nothing but "Windows ME sux" from people all over. I've heard it from so many different people i cant even remember em all, and over time, i realized why. Here is a list of things that has happend to my f---ing computer because of windows ME, and i wasnt trying to blame the CD thing on ME by the way, but i thought that maybe it had something to do with it cuz it sux ass:

1: Ive had to restore me system 3 times because of ME. First 2 times, my computer was getting an <exploere.exe> error, and we all know what thatll do to ur fking computer. Pretty soon, the computer would load to the desktop, but nothing would show up except the background. So that got this computer restored 3 times. Third time was just recently. And yes, it was the blue screen of death. "Windows Protectin Error" showed up on the bootup, and we could not get past it except in safe mode, where i tried everything to fix it.

2: I've had so many damn error messages and stuff come up in ME, it's unnbelievable to me how bill gates is rich lol. So many error messages, especially when trying to install and run certain things on ME, which b4 i download read to see if it is compatible, they come up with an error message. Which brings me to another point. Compared to XP, ME wont run half the s--- that XP runs, which pisses me off.

3: ME has so many damn security leaks, it's amazing. This is probably why i have had to restore my damn comp 3 times. In addition to all the error messages, ME will freez/crash u r computer more than any other system made, and that is a fact. And it aint a speed or ram issues either cuz i got plenty. ME is so vulnerable to hacks, viruses, spyware, etc that everyday im on my computer, i probably acquire at least 1 piece of spyware/virus, u name it. I even read online about how ME has the most security leaks out of any system. Even with all the windows updates, i ddidnt notice any difference.

POINT: XP kicks the s--- out of ME. ME blows hard, and has is unsecure unstable windows system ever made, even 98 is better than ME! I never had problems with 98 when it came to security issues! Oh did i mention that i have a fkin firewall on this computer too? lol

yep, it's ME

I can't speak for JackG, but I've been building & repairng computers as a hobby for over 10 years now. I've worked with DOS6.22/Win3.1, Win9x, WinME, Win2K, & WinXP. I can make any one of them work, & work well. I've run across many of JackG's posts & he knows his stuff...if you noticed, he has his own webpage devoted to WinME.

All operating systems have to be tweaked. None of them are perfect, nor will they ever be. If XP was so flawless there would be no need for SP1 or SP2. Just browse thru the forums...people have problems will ALL versions of Windows, not just WinME.

A firewall doesn't offer anywhere near the amount of protection that people think...neither do anti-v programs. If they did, all you'd have to do is install them, & forget about them. If you want a good running system, you have to maintain it. JackG listed a lot of the things that have to be done on a regular basis. And if you surf porn sites, use filesharing programs such as KaZaA, or use AOL, you're just asking from trouble.

You've bought into the "WinME sucks" hype & there's no way I can change your mind. So why don't you just format your HDD, install WinXP, & shut the fvck up. I'm sure you'll be posting your problems in the WinXP forum in no time.

Wow dude u really are a fking moron huh, ME sux ass, it has the most security flaws, i didnt say it had all of em. I know XP has security flaws, i have it on another computer, but wiuth the updates, and even without them, XP is way more secure than ME will ever be, so blow me. And i dont use aol or IE cuz they both suck, popups, viruses, etc. I use firefox, the best browser there is. I dont surf porn sites, but i do use limewire. Even so, with multiple spyware, virus, and adware removing programs, that should not affect my computer's security. So let me make this clear to u as u obviously didnt catch it b4, all windows OS have security flaws, but Windows ME has the most and is the most vulnerable to them. At least compared to win 95, 98, and xp, i have not used any other.

yep, it's ME

Hey, don't take your inadequacies out on me. I know how to make WinME run well, obviously you do not. Like I said, just format your drive, install XP, & quit your whining.

Whow guys , chill out ,its only a O/S ,and they all have thier probs . I think a lttle stress managment is what is needed ! I do not have any exprience with any other O/S except WinMe. However it is true if you check all of the forums on other O/S you will find they all have thier little quirks. Alot of times the biggest prob is between the computer and the person using it ! I have a feeling Hatz has kicked his tower one time to many ! Remember computers are stupid machines ,that need people to make them work right or mess them up. However even a stupid machine needs love and patience. Be gentle and pet it and say nice PC , it may try a little harder for you , if you did not give it so much verbal abuse, it would not need years of counseling !
Peace Out ,Nick
