cannot boot up advent 5493 laptop

I have an advent 5493 laptop running windows me - On booting I can only get as far as 'system configuration data updated', I have tried a bootdisk to get a dos prompt, and have tried pressing F2 to get into BIOS setup but nothing happens - the laptop just freezes - any ideas?

Try safe mode.
To get to Safe Mode, start (or restart) your computer, and, as soon as you see the "starting Windows 9X" text, hit the F8 key. Choose option 3, Safe Mode.

Ive tried F8 etc but it doesnt work as doesnt get that fat - it freezes on the POST screen - Ive managed to press F2 for setup - and it says entering setup but nothing happens - i dont get any beeps or anything

Before power up insert either win 98, ME or XP CD. Then on power up goto the Bios and select boot of CD, then select install and it will overwrite the boot section but will leave any other documents in the hard disk. After doing all this dont forget to put the settings back in the bios to boot of C.
I have not done the above for years so if any of the info is not 100% correct then sorry.....
