Hi Dudes,
After messing around with WinME to speed it up, make it more stable and save space, everything is fine but I can't disable system restore by checking the form field in the control panel system. Every time I do it and reopen the dialog even after reboot it is unchecked again! I would not bother but since this happened scan disk always stops due to system activity - that's not good.
Thanx in advance!
Tom

Did you go to :start,settings,control panel,system properties,performance tab,filesystem,troubleshooting tab,check"Disable system restore".reboot hope this helps

reenable, then use disk clean - more options tab
disable and turn off with msconfig
*statemgr -or something like that.TheGorx
Windows Help

The whole process to really disable "system restore" is not so short. It isn't very hard, either, but there are several steps to follow. You may wish to print this so you can go through the directions carefully.
First go to Start/Run. Type msconfig, then press Enter. Go to the Start-up tab, and uncheck both *statemgr and PCHealth. Click on OK, then restart your computer as indicated.
After that, right click on My PC, go to Properties/Performance tab/File System/Troubleshooting tab, and check the "Disable system restore" box. Click on OK, then close all open windows and restart your PC again as required.
However, that's not all. Remember that "system restore" creates a folder called "_RESTORE" on your hard disk, and this folder has to removed for the process to be complete and to help you recover disk space. That's a hidden folder, so if you can't see it from Explorer just go to Tools/Folder options/View, and check "Show (unhide) all hidden files and folders", and click OK.
Now you should be able to see the "_RESTORE" folder on your C: drive from Explorer. This folder, which can grow outrageously large, can't be removed right away because Windows just won't let you, even if you try to change its read-only/hidden attributes. You'll have to go into real MS-DOS by using a start-up Win Me floppy disk, which you probably made during the installation process of Win Me. If not, you can use a Win 98 floppy instead.
So, now you have to insert the floppy disk and restart your system to enter DOS. Choose any of the start-up options when prompted to do so. At the A:\ prompt, type c:\ and press Enter.
Write attrib -r -a -s -h c:\_restore and press Enter to unhide that folder (be careful to leave a blank space before each "-" sign).
Now change to the "_restore" folder by writing cd _restore, then press Enter.
Write del *.* then press Enter and "Y" (Yes) to delete its contents.
However, the "_restore" folder can't be removed yet, but this little trick will let you: you must rename it first as follows:Go back to the root directory by typing cd.. and pressing Enter.
At the c:\ prompt, type ren _restore useless and press Enter ("useless" is the new name I've chosen for the folder now. You can use any name you like as long as you remember it later).
Now take out the floppy disk and restart your computer. From Windows Explorer, find the folder called "useless" (or whatever name you chose), then right-click on it and delete it.
That's it. If the infamous "_restore" folder ever reappears (which may happen if you update some Windows components such as Internet Explorer), you won't need to go through all this long process again. You'll be able to just right-click on it to delete it.
However, if you ever have to reinstall WinMe, you'll have to repeat the above process in full in order to disable "system restore".
Hope this has been of help.

Hi Dudes,
Sorry it took me so long to answer to your very friendly and detailed suggestions! However, this did not help with my problem. WinME does not allow me to check the "disable system restore" checkbox. I can check it but next time I open it or after reboot it is unchecked again. I already deleted all _restore folders sucessfully and disabled the function successfully before but now it starts working again every time I have a crash and unfortunately happens quite often - almost every time I want to shut down: blue screen: protection error - system halted. Next start scandisk tries to check my HDs and is interrupted every time - I think because system restore starts up. Any further suggestions??
Thanx, Tom.
