I was recently given a UMAX 1220P scanner and tried to set it up on my computer with Windows ME. When I went to the UMAX site to try to install the drivers they said the scanner was incompatible with ME and I had to pick another OS. I've seen other messages here where people said they've used the 1220P with ME. Can anyone help?

Tom,

I use a 1200p with Winme, The installation was an upgrade over win98se though, maybe that accounts for the reason.
system is:-
PIII550 @ 620
128Mb ram
6.4HD
Matrox G400
Supermicro P6SBA
creative awe64 (yeuch)
Logitech trackman
Umax 1220p with a HP690C using parralell pass through cable.
All latest bios and drivers.
Anyway.
I had the Umax Vistascan software and 35Mb? service pack? 98 update? installed and it seems to work fine, I then fooled win98se into accepting the full version Win ME as an upgrade and hey presto.

I also tried installing the vistascan stuff on winMe, and although I didn't give it the best of workouts the copy facility and all seemed to work ok, remeber to do a system restore point, and if it all goes pear shaped, undo the changes.

I have a 1200U and had problems with Vistascan 3.1 which they say is for my scanner. I downloaded Vistascan 3.5 and all seems to work ok.

I emailed their tech support anyway and they said Vistascan is not supported under Me but that Me itself supports it with the scanner wizard. Haven't tried it yet as 3.5 seems to work.

I did a clean install of WIN ME and the 1220P works fine. The only thing I found, it that you must have "VISTASCAN" in your startup folder, so it loads when WIN ME starts up. If you try to use the scanner software without loading it when windows starts, you will get the blue screen of death. At least I do.

I use a Umax 1220P with Windows ME and have had no problems or errors. I only install the vistascan drivers that came with this scanner and it works flawlessly. I would recommend adding a IDE controller card to one of your ISA slots. This will enable you to plug your scanner into its own connector and avoids the pass thru to your printer. Speed is improved and quality is better.
