- Hello,"PLEASE HELP!" here's my problem:
(*) I've just installed 'Windows Me' via 'Windows 95'; And when 'Windows Me'setup was nearly finished, I received this message on a blue screen:
" Your multi-function device(VIA Bus Master PCI IDE controller) has some child devices using 32-bit drivers and others using 16-bit drivers.
This configuration is not supported, so your computer has been halted to prevent corruption. After you restar your computer, windows will use compatibility-Mode drivers for each child device attached to this multi-function device.
If you want to use 32-bit drivers, you may be able to obtain an update for the device that caused the problem by contacting your hardware manufacture, or you can disable the device. "
(*) Then I noticed that:
1-> my CD-Rom drive letter was Lost !
(I am Unable to get access to it, under Windows Me.)2-> That there was 2 exclamation point on:
(Start/Settings/ControlPanel/System/Device manager/:/Hard disk Controller//[ Primary & secondary IDE Controller(dual fifo) ])
3-> And finally, it's saying in:
(Start/Settings/ControlPanel/System/Performance/:/[Compatibility-mode paging reduces overall system performance./
/Drive C(D & E) is using MS-DOS compatibility mode file system]).
Note: I've two HDD drive, the second is partionned in 2, wich mean that I've C,D&E.
and of course a CD-rom, wich i can't access right now due to the problem I've just explained.(*) Thank You for reading, 'I would apreciate any help !!'
Once again thanx.Ace_

Howdy, Start the system in safe mode and go to start/run and type in regedit. Go to edit/find annd search for NoIDE if anything is found..delete the key and restart and hope everything goes ok. It doesn't always and the NoIDE key is not always present. The problem can be fixed without reformatting the HDD but can be a real pain to fix sometims. The longest It ever took me to fix this problem was 3 hours but that was on a Win 95 system and the client could not loose his data. It can be fixed though. If that does not work, let me know.

Dear friend, thanx for replying..
well I did exactly what you said, but after restart i get once again the blue screen with the same message as I told you in my first message. (I've deleted "Just" the "NoIDE" key, <>[selected,in blue]) Please, Is there any thing else I can try to get back my CD-Rom drive, and if possible Windows Me working correctly? without reformatting the HDD.
Thank You _ Hope to hear from you..

you havn't got any entries in autoexec.bat / config.sys for the cd have you?
you could temporarily disconnect your second drive ( either physically or in bios) to see if it is a drive letter conflict.
also,
check your mbd manual and bios to ensure the correct settings for pnp aware os and bus mastering. win95 usually requires a chipset driver to make the pci ide work which comes on the cd with the board, whereas 98 and therefore probably me needs to use its own.
in safe mode you could go into device manager and remove all drives/cdroms.
a reboot will find them again.

I have this PCI-IDE problem on my PC ever since I reloaded Windows 98. I've gone into the registry where suggested to remove the NoIDE key but it isn't there. Any other suggestions what I can do to get back my DVD Drive? Thanks Take Care John
