If the files needed are on the HD, you can usually find out where by looking for files of type .CAB, like this:

attrib /s \*.cab

They are often in c:\windows\options\cabs or similar.

Thare are about 80 CABs; you need all of them and all the other files in the same directory.

So if you find them, burn the whole directory to CD.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Did you break the ME installation CD or the Recovery CD? If you still have the Recovery CD, that's all you need to reinstall and get your system back to its original configuration. If you really need the OS CD, you can contact Gateway and explain what happened, and I'm sure they'd send you another OS CD, as long as you can provide your License Number.

Mechanix do I type "attrib /s \*.cab" into the RUN or SEARCH field? I typed it into the RUN field and it opens a DOS window (I think thats what it's called) --- it finds a whole bunch of files but the DOS window will not let me scroll up to see all the files --- at JENNIFER when I originally bought my computer in 1999 GATEWAY sent it with WINDOWS NT although I didn't ask them for that OS --- not being able to use the DVD player or USB ports I told them they need to send me WINDOWS 98 --- they refused --- I had to go out and purchase WINDOWS ME full install CDmyself --- I have the NT Recovery CD but that does me no good --- my computer works fine now but I want the ME full install CD in case I need to do a full install again --- if anyone could give me a little more in depth explanation of making a FULL WINDOWS ME INSTALL CD from my HD it would be greatly appreciated!!!

P.S. I have a floopy that came with the WINDOWS ME CD --- it says it's a BOOT DISK for WINDOWS ME -- does this have all the info needed for a CLEAN INSTALL?

Hi,
On my full install the files you need are in c:\windows\options
Both the cab folder and the install folder contain files you need to copy. Then to start the install change to the Install folder and run setup from that folder.
Be sure to save a copy of your Product Key.
